The British mobile-only bank said there had not been a data breach but that it would examine its use of “private links”, which are sometimes used for information which a customer has originally shared with the bank via email.

On Twitter, Starling customer Ben McRae complained that the bank “does not take security seriously” after the bank sent an image of his passport photo page to him in an internet link in an email.

The bank said the URL was tokenised, which meant it would have been “unguessable” to outsiders, and others would have been unable to access the information unless the link had also been shared with them.
A spokeswoman added that use of the links was “extremely rare” and had only happened in a handful of cases, but said the bank was “reviewing our use of the private link feature and related internal procedures”.
