Only a guess here but there is a feature in Windows to allow the running of software prior to Windows loading (managed in a REGISTRY key)... for instance it's used by Windows itself when a ChkDisk is scheduled during a reBOOT.

If the application is truly "standalone" (doesn't need any super duper Windows API functions), it should present the same interface as it does when running under Windows. There's a discussion elsewhere on the forum about using this facility with the "Image For Windows" product (don't have the link... it's way too early and I haven't had enough coffee:D )

As Wendi indicated, DS 1.40 can initiate the restore from its Windows GUI. While in the Windows GUI you identify the image (.sna) file you wish to restore, the target partition, and the desired action after the restore is completed (e.g., restart the system). DS then reboots the system into DOS and executes the restore. DS does not make any changes to the MBR.

I contacted Acronis support and this is what they had to say:

I just left out the personal info! And also got the upgrade to ATI 2011 with there free plus pack!

Sorry, for whatever reason this forum never sends me emails on replies.

Image for Windows or Image for Linux. They blow the pants off Acronis.

I haven't tried Terabayte Image for Linux for a while - but I definitely will as I'm planning to buy an SSD, and according to some postings in the Clonezilla forum Conezilla does nothing about correct alignment.

However, it seems that Image for Windows/Linux doesn't do it automatically either. Apparently specific restore options should be used. Page 72 of the Image for Linux manual mentions the following command line option:

    (Emphasis added.)

    Can anybody confirm that?

This is also confirmed in their BootIt Bare Metal manual on page 56:

Conclusion: If you're using Image for Windows/Linux with an SSD, make sure that you select above restore options - otherwise you have to expect a performance deterioration after a restoration.
