metfizx: This program has been damaged..

for what it's worth, i have the same problem.

i too ran hijackthis, cwshredder, and Spybot (all latest versions). This got rid of all the spyware that i could detect. everything works fine for the moment, except for (2) things:

    1. if i do a "? <search word>" from the browser it comes up with the "searchpage" and a spyware detect warning popup. but when going back into hijackthis, i dont see anything that shows infection. nothing is detected by spybot or cwshredder. so it is a leftover from the stubborn "searchpage" problem. nothing in the registry that i could find.

    2. i get the error with spywareblaster, as described in this thread, after i install it and attempt to run it. it uninstalls fine however.

here's a lame suggestion...did anyone do a search on *all* files for the key phrase "this program has been damaged" o_O? this might reveal "who" is sending this message out. it says spywareblaster, but is it o_O o_O

i see the logn.dll in the c:\windows\system32 but cannot delete it.
i got rid of the dll value for the AppInit_DLLS, which was pointing to
    \windows\system32\logn.dll

but i tried all methods i can think of to del logn.dll but cannot.
    tried :
killbox (also with del on reboot)
    cmd, attrib -r, and del
safe mode cmd, attrib -r, del

all say dont have permission, but i am administrator

    here are my logs..

i was able to solve by just renaming the logn.dll, although i could not delete it.

i followed all the other steps, such as rerunning CWS, and Hijackthis.
i also checked the AppInit_DLLS key and it was still clean.

sorry i havent read the link you provided, but i will, and perhaps then i can get it deleted.

however, the renaming worked, since i could install and run spywareblaster with no weird error messages popping up.

thanks for all who helped solve this nasty one..

can someone tell me if i will get reinfected even though i was able to defeat it (able to run spywareblaster w/o error popup) ? this was the original problem...not being able to run spywareblaster.

i see no evidence of infection...

before i noticed bogus dll's being generated in the \windows\system32 area, which all had the same date stamp at the same time the computer got infected. weird.

i renamed them all...so they could not be found/launched, and also renamed logn.dll...after i found out about this part of the problem.

oh, another interesting thing....i noticed that the firewall was enabled (XP's) but ICS was checked....so i unchecked it, since there is no ICS with this case. if it uses a mechanism to update itself via (i think port 137/139), then how did it get in?

after unchecking ICS, it seemed to stop it. but i am not completely sure here..note, this is before i did anything with AppInit_DLLS, meaning the rogue dll was still active.

    sorry if this seems rambling...

one of the problems with these cws hijackers is that each computer has been affected differently

ICS is not something we have noticed but we could well have missed that bit

I would disable XP firewall and to see if we can prevent the cws hijackers reinfecting you try this
a workaround seems to be install a good firewall, lists here http://www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm if you haven't already got one and block these ranges of ports, both incoming and outgoing 209.66.114.0-209.66.115.255 and 81.211.105.0-81.211.105.255 and 213.159.118.0-213.159.118.255
that stops the known cws servers responding or the hidden files on your computer updating. This works sometimes but not always, but it's a help. The problem with this approach is that some good sites might also be blocked
