Sony is seeking to sell off its PlayStation Vue TV business for a figure in the "tens of millions," ending a multi-year experiment in taking on cable companies with lower-cost, "skinny" streaming TV bundles.

Citing people familiar with the situation, The Information reports that Sony began working with Bank of America Merrill Lynch to explore the possibility of selling Vue as the company seeks to raise its stock price by shedding businesses that are not making money.
Sony has approached one potential buyer, sports streaming service FuboTV, but apparently to no avail. The report claims Sony's service has 500,000 US households ad subscribers, and it has raised the prices of its bundles multiple times in a failed effort to achieve profitability.

It's worth noting, by the way, that Vue is the only cable-like subscription streaming service available on the PlayStation 4. Sony has thus far not worked with Hulu or YouTube to bring their competitors to the platform. That could shift if Vue changes hands, though.

The big picture: What the industry really needs is true a la carte option, not just traditional bundles delivered over the Internet. But that seems less likely than in recent years as dedicated video streaming platforms are currently all the rage. Apple and Disney, for example, are set to launch their respective streaming services in the coming weeks which could slow Internet TV growth across the entire industry.

Eric Haggstrom, forecasting analyst at eMarketer, believes some of these services could eventually go away entirely. They’re all essentially the same meaning they all face the same challenges as traditional TV bundles.

Sony announced today that it will end PlayStation Vue. The internet-based television service will go offline on January 30, 2020.

Vue started in 2015, offering a subscription in exchange for internet access to TV channels. Sony positioned the service as an alternative to traditional cable. However, competitors like Netflix and YouTube TV have proved to be more popular options.

“Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected,” Sony notes. “Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.”
Vue may not have worked out, but Sony’s gaming division is doing great.

YouTube TV, a cord-cutter-friendly live TV streaming service designed to replace traditional cable TV, is now available on PlayStation 4 consoles. The move comes a week before Sony's own such service, PlayStation Vue, is due to close down.

YouTube TV's tweet announcing the debut of the service declares that the PS4 controller is now "your new TV remote."

After almost five years of service, Sony has officially pulled the plug on PlayStation Vue on Thursday, January 30. Sony announced that it would shutter the service back in October of last year, giving users more significant notice before following through with its plan.

Alongside Sling TV, YouTube TV and Hulu, PlayStation Vue was one of just a handful of cable alternatives that provided live TV to customers without a contract or extra equipment, and was considered by man to be a pioneer in the streaming space.
As of today, the sign-up portal has been closed down and the PlayStation Vue app on mobile devices only displays the message "PlayStation Vue is no longer available. Thank you for your support."
Vue is gone, so what's a cord-cutter to do?
The good news is that, for those looking to replace PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV is a great alternative and, thanks to a recent update, is now available on PS4, browsers and mobile phones - pretty much everywhere you could watch PlayStation Vue.
