Hi. This is my first post and I'm not as knowledgable as a lot of you, so please bear with me.

I seem to have fallen victim to the Cool Web Search curse and I cannot get rid of it. I've tried various Spyware removal tools, including Cool Web Shredder, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, NAV, and SpySweeper, but nothing works. Merijn's Cool Web Shredder reports that removal has been successful but everytime I reboot the blighter comes back to haunt me! Dame thing with SpySweeper.

My hijackthis.log file follows and any help anyone could give me with the removal of this scumware would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello chesh,

Run Hijackthis again with all browsers closed and check this item and then on Fix:

    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/1991c6b...ip/RdxIE601.cab

    Reboot.

I am not seeing much else with your log so let me know how things go after fixing this.

Also, when you run CWShredder, are you clicking on Fix or Scan. I just want to make sure you click on Fix.

Post a new HJT log when you are done.

    Hi Taz,

Thanks for your reply. I've done what you asked and rebooted. I have been clicking on fix instead of just scan whenever I've run Cool Web Shredder but this hasn't helped.

Your solution seems to have sorted things for the moment, however I'm still being redirected to the Cool Web Search (about:blank) page and getting pop-ups telling me I'm infected when I try to find an address that doesn't exist.

I have attached the latest HiJackThis! log file for you to look at, if you can see any other problems please let me know.

    Thanks again.

    Hello,

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.
    Name the file Appinit.bat
    Save as type All Files
    Save on the Desktop.

    Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt (if you don't find the file on your desktop, do a search for it.)
Copy and paste that log here.

    Hello,

Yes it does look like jibberish, but it is showing us you have a hidden dll. And this is the one we have to get rid of:C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctla.dll

So this is what I need:

Do you use XP home or XP professional?

Is your system file NTFS or Fat32?
(To find this one out, just go to Start>My Computer>highlight your C: drive,
and right click on it and select properties. Near the top it will tell you what file system you have.)

We need this info before we can get rid of that dll

    Hi,

I'm using XP home on the NTFS file system. Built the computer myself just under a year ago and the last fresh install of windows was Feb this year. Have kept up to date with all the Windows Updates etc.

    What next?

Re: HiJackThis! log file - please help!

Download this file and then immediately sign off the
internet and stay off until all steps are finished.

    http://computercops.biz/modules.php?nam...ad&id=1183

Extract the batch file (hiving.bat) and run it. If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow this to run. The script is just producing a message box. Double click on the batch to run it. After a reboot the super hidden nasty file will no longer be loaded and will be visible. This will end the constant reinstall of about:Blank.

    ----------------------
You run Home and so you will restart into Safe mode.

Restart into Safe mode and find this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctla.dll

Use the security tab on ctla.dll and take ownership.
    Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
    it first to different name+ext.
    Example:
    log.dll>bleh.txt
    bleh.txt > badfile.111

Once you have successfully deleted the file restart into Regular Windows mode.

    Extract and Run CWShredder immediately.
Press the fix button to clean.

    Restart and run hijackThis again.

Post your new log here in your next reply.

Also please create a new Windows.txt and attach it so we can doublecheck.

    Hello again,

When I click on the link you gave me I'm told I can't access that file directly. If you give me the name of the program/archive I can download it via the download section.

    Hi,

Sorry it's been a day or so, I've been away.

Have done all you asked and deleted ctla.dll without a problem. When I rebboted as normal I had to set up my internet connection again which was strange, and about:blank hasn;t completely dissapeared. Here is the latest HiJackThis! log file:

    Hello,

Your hidden dll is gone. That is a good thing.

Open IE and go to Tools> Internet Options and in the first box is where you can type in what web page you would like to be your homepage. Do that and click on Apply.

Reboot your computer and start IE again and tell me if your homepage you typed in came up.

Re: HiJackThis! log file - please help!

    Hi there,

I have done that and everything appears fine at the moment. The about:blank page has dissapeared for now and I haven't had any pop-ups so I think we've cracked it. If I have any problems I'll let you know, but like I say I think it's gone.

Thanks very much for your help, I'm very grateful.
