ahammerton - if you don't behave I am going to make you wait longer!

You do NOT run the FINDnFIX tool without first being asked to do so by someone who knows the other steps involved. Which I guess you found out you cannot finish using the tool since you do not know the other steps involved.

Your log is not more important than other's who have waited patiently. Then you go and start an entirely new thread, which takes up my time having to locate the threads and merge them together. Do not do that please.

You will have to wait now until I have time to go through your log. Do not run the FINDnFIX tool again until asked.

    Thank you,

    snap

Re: Hijack Log Help - Please (merged)

    Hi ahhammerton,

I have not been able to find out if there was a newer version released for the FINDnFIX tool yet, but since you do have the one I have the instructions for, and it has identified the bad dll in your last scan with it. Let's give it a go and we'll try and clean it up.

Open the FINDnFIX folder and double click on !LOG!.bat.
IMPORTANT! Before you run this tool please close ALL running programs and ALL open windows except for the FINDnFIX folder.

The program will take a few minutes to finish while it collects the necessary information, then it will create a Log.txt file.
Post the contents of the Log.txt in your next reply.

(I will watch for when you're on line as I want to go through each step with you)

    Regards,

    snap

Due to errors on various message boards I made some changes.
You must know how to ID the file based on the filters provided in
the scan, as not all the files flagged are bad.
If you make a mistake or use the wrong guidance, it is completely
your responsibility and the helper that assists you.
If you are not sure about the nature of the file or how
to proceed, I suggest you research it first before attempting
to remove any *unknown file on your own.
*For Helpers and/or users that are not familiar with any of the
items on the scan results- I recommend using an alternative, once
you know what to look for!

    Hi ahammerton,

Ok, the bad dill is identified: wingmph.dll

Now follow these next set of steps carefully, in the exact order given:

(This next step will restart your computer.)

    1. Go to the FINDnFIX\Keys1 and double-click on the FIX.bat file.
You will get a prompt that your computer is preparing to restart in 15 seconds. Allow it to reboot.

    2. After your computer has restarted, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the wingmph.dll file (it should be viewable now)

When found, highlight the "wingmph.dll" file with one left-click.
In the folder's top menu, click *Edit* and *Move to folder*.

Select C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx as destination (click the junkxxx folder once to select it) then click the "Move* button to move the file into the junkxxx folder.
(you might get a prompt about 'read-only' file -Simply 'ok' it!)

    3. When done, Open the C:\FINDnFIX main folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat
It will run and generate new log (log1.txt) in the FINDnFIX folder.
Open the log1.txt and copy & past the contents here in your next reply.

*Note: Do not change/move around or tamper with any of the file(s) folder(s) and path included in the 'FINDnFIX' folder.

    Almost there.

    Open the FINDnFIX\Files2 <-- Subfolder.
Double-click on the ZIPZAP.bat file to run it.
It will quickly clean the rest and will create a zipped copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions.

Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses. Thanks!

(Please remember to include a link to this thread in the email, so any errors in the process can be traced back.)

Stay with me, there's a few more cleanup steps we need to do.
Tell me when you've finished this step.

Re: Hijack Log Help - Please (merged)

Don't worry about the email then.

You are going to be running CWShredder while in safe mode, so you may want to copy these instructions to a .txt file, or print them out for easy access

    ***
First, make sure you have the most recent versions of the following:
    CWShredder v.1.59.01.

    Hijackthis 1.98.0-hotfix.

Ad-Aware6 build 6.181, and that you have brought it up-todate by clicking on the program's webupdate (the globe icon), then click the "connect" button to download the most recent Reference-file.
Follow these instructions for setting up Ad-Aware for a full scan: How To Perform a "Full Scan" with Ad-Aware6.
Do a scan and fix what it finds, and reboot when scan is finished.

Spybot Search&Destroy v1.3, install, and bring it up-to-date by pressing the "Search for Updates" button, and download all updates. Once it is up-to-date, click on the "Check for Problems" button. When the scan is finished, select what is found in Red and choose "Fix selected problems" button. Reboot after the scan.

    ***

Then boot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

With ALL browsers and any open windows or programs closed, double-click the CWShredder.exe to open it, then click the *Fix button (not the scan button) and follow the instructions you will receive when the program runs.

    Empty your Temp folders' contents:
C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit -> Select All then Edit -> Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder (do not delete the Temp folder itself)

C:\Documents and Settings\ <user's name>\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit -> Select All then Edit -> Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder (do not delete the Temp folder itself)

Open Internet Explorer - >Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.

Then run both AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Reboot your computer normally, and run CWShredder, AdAware, and Spybot S&D again in normal mode.

Go to Microsoft's Update Site download and install ALL Critical Updates listed for XP and IE6 installed.

Since you are using filesharing apps, I want you to do a FULL system scan at one of these on-line scan sites: Free Services

Then scan with Hijackthis and post a new log here so we clean up what's left.

    Regards,

Re: Hijack Log Help - Please (merged)

    Hi ahammerton,

Your log is clean, and I'm not sure if you know how lucky you are because the tool we just used has since been pulled by the Developer and is no longer available for download. Not sure if it will be again or not either.

You can delete the entire "FINDnFIX" folder with the bad file(s) in it now, then empty your Recycle Bin.

I would recommend uninstalling Kazaa since it is a known source for infection, and choose an alternative. This is your choice of course, but it doesn't need to start up when you turn your computer on, and fixing it in Hijackthis does not delete the program.

Open HijackThis, rescan, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any open programs/windows, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KAZAA] "C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++\kpp.exe" "C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite K++\KazaaLite.kpp" /SYSTRAY
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup

(these are optional to fix but recommended since fixing them will save you some resources, and they are not needed at startup)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Uninstall SpyKiller. Read here way: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products
It is also strongly advised to uninstall KAZAA. Many infected files come with file sharing.
See here for some alternatives: Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs
You have the very best with AdAware6 and Spybot S&D and they are both free with full support forums.

Once you are sure your system is clean, turn off System Restore, then reboot your computer to purge old restore points to remove any infection that would have been backed up in there: System Restore Instructions for XP. Remember to re-enable System Restore after a reboot, and set a new Restore Point

Here are some steps to follow to help tighten your security and prevent future infection:
Why did I get infected in the first place?

    Regards,

You're very welcome ahammerton. Glad we could help. :)

The FindnFix tool was removed because too many people were mis-using it without fully knowing all the steps involved, which could lead to causing more harm than good.

It looks like everything is running smoothly now on your computer, so I'll mark this thread as solved.

    Safe surfing, ahammerton. :)
