    Hello

I have made numerous attempts to remove what appears to be a hijack browser malware.

Most recently I have installed and run Spybot 1.2 and removed the files it finds,
I have run CWShredder but everytime I re boot I am re-infected with the same "smartsearch" malware.

Below is the current Hijack this log:

any guidance or help is appreciated.

I am familiar enough with the system edit the registry (though it is not my favorite thing to do, to easy to really cause a problem)

I suspect the virus / trojan is hidden in memory, possibly the svchost.exe as it continually re-writes itself when I tried to end the process.

    Thanks

    Hi mdmscifi,

Can you please email me this file? :

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msawindows.exe <- this exe

    unzyATwilderssecurity.com (AT =@) thnx!

Then have only HijackThis running and fix :

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9527D42F-D666-11D3-B8DD-00600838CD5F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\IETie.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] msawindows.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe 1

Restart PC afterdoing so and remove :

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msawindows.exe <- this file
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\AWS\ <- this folder

    Run shredder again

Update XP and IE to the latest paches via windowsupdate.com

Can you confirm if this proxy setting is correct? :

    ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:7212

    Hope this helps

    Cheers,

I am still working on this.

The computer is not mine (its a relatives) and I do not always have access to it. I had some difficulties attaching the requested file, but will try again this evening.

Please bear with me, when you only get small windows to work on major problems, it can be difficult.

    Thanks for your assistance

I will work on trying the suggested fix tonight as well.

(Is this something fairly new? or are all the recent postings showing a trend?)

PS I am primarily a MAC person, we have our own problems, but they tend to be fewer (I am aware of the recent security bulletin regarding Safari)
    Thanks

    mdsmcifi
