Try a-squared Free v4.5.0.8 by Emsi Software
All scans and updates are manual with no real time or background activity or protection
The Anti-Spyware engine is home grown by Emsi Software
The Anti-Virus engine is the mighty IKARUS by Ikarus Security Software
Only one Windows Service is installed
    Digitally Signed Software
Only ever had one False Positive and that False Positive has been corrected

Details of the a-squared scanner technology can be found here:
    http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/technology/

An detailed explanation of the a-squared service can be found here:
    http://www.emsisoft.com/en/support/faq/?id=110

Features, Screenshots, and Downloading of a-squared Free can be found here:

    My preferred download Site:
Download a-squared Free v4.5.0.8 with Description, Technical, and Change Log here:

Excellent Web Based scanners and Registry Cleaner (must accept ActiveX):

01)- Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (easier to Run online opposed to downloading)
Features more in-depth customized scanning opposed to the Microsoft Update/Windows Update Site
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx

02)- Microsoft Live OneCare Safety Scanner (use Protection and Cleanup only)
Protection = Antivirus and Antispyware scan
    Cleanup = Registry Cleaner

you can try an online quick scan from BitDefender, it's very fast, 30 seconds or something like that. They lunched yesterday BitDefender 2010 version that allows on-demand scans to be completed in half the time needed by previous versions. It's a good thing, for us who use BitDefender.
