Fully self-driving cars may be on the fast lane to U.S. roads under a pilot program the Trump administration said on Tuesday it was considering, which would allow real-world road testing for a limited number of the vehicles.

Self-driving cars used in the program would potentially need to have technology disabling the vehicle if a sensor fails or barring vehicles from traveling above safe speeds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a document made public Tuesday.

NHTSA said it was considering whether it would have to be notified of any accident within 24 hours and was seeking public input on what other data should be disclosed including near misses.

Autonomous vehicle company Waymo has just completed 10 million miles of testing on public roads -- and by the end of the month it'll have clocked up seven billion miles in its virtual world

According to Krafcik, Waymo now plans to concentrate on capability, comfort and convenience. Its engineers are reportedly working on new in-house sensing systems, which will help vehicles navigate complex weather conditions, such as rain and snow.

It's also working on maneuverability. Krafcik says the company is working on striking the balance between caution and assertiveness, and cited merging lanes in fast-moving traffic as an example of the challenges it faces.

Aurora, the buzzy self-driving car startup, has become the first company officially authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to test its vehicles on public roads.

Aurora has been testing its autonomous vehicles on public streets in Pittsburgh since late 2017. And other companies such as Argo AI also test autonomous vehicles there.

Pennsylvania law allows testing of highly automated vehicles as long as there’s a licensed driver behind the wheel who can take control if needed. [...]

Aurora doesn’t hire independent contractors as test drivers. Instead it uses full-time employees who go through a 12-week training program that includes a defensive driving course and coursework on how to operate the self-driving system safely.

So how much autonomy are we prepared to give the vehicles that we drive (or don't drive, as the case may be)? Is it enough to have algorithms in sufficient supply to operate the vehicle without human intervention?

In reality, the autonomy of vehicles is graded on a scale from zero to five, with zero meaning no autonomy and five signifying complete autonomy.

Deploying AI on an environment like a ship is technically challenging for a variety of reasons [...] Severe weather conditions can make it difficult for LIDAR sensors to detect far-away objects. Digital images must be processes in high detail to detect images in the water.

Rolls-Royce -- a key player in the shipping industry -- has been invested in autonomous systems for the last three years, Daffey told reporters last week.
"The purpose has been to drive additional safety into shipping," he said, noting that about 70 percent to 80 percent of accidents at sea are caused by human error.

So maybe the key there is awareness. The public would benefit from knowing more about these vehicles, how they work, how they’re tested, and how they’re likely to behave.

Just over 70% of drivers worldwide believe they can go out and buy a fully-autonomous, self-driving car today, according to research commissioned by automotive research consultancy Thatcham Research [...] which has uncovered potentially dangerous levels of confusion over exactly what the current generation of connected vehicles are capable of.

Just under half of drivers did not believe they would be liable in the event of a crash while using assisted driving systems.

Thatcham’s director of research, Matthew Avery, laid the blame for the lack of clarity firmly at the door of car makers such as Audi, BMW and Tesla, all of which rely heavily on assisted driving capabilities in their advertising.

“It’s a delicate balancing act for carmakers. Offer too much assistance to the driver and they disengage, offer too little and the driver thinks ‘What’s the point?’ and switches the system off. The best systems are those that support the driver, but leave them in no doubt that they remain in control,” he said.

Drive.ai Brings Its Self-Driving Cars to Dallas Cowboy Fans

Today, startup Drive.ai is launching a self-driving car service in Arlington, Texas, which sits halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth and is home to the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.

The service will start with three vehicles, which will have human safety operators sitting behind the wheel, ready to take control if anything goes awry. To ride, you have to register through Drive.ai’s app or enter your name and phone number at one of the kiosks the company will set up along its routes.

“This is not a short technical demo,” says CEO Bijit Halder.

Drive.ai is set to run these routes for a year, and while it’s not charging riders anything, it’s being paid $434,952 for the service. A federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Improvement Grant will provide $343,000; the rest comes Arlington’s coffers.

The on-demand ride company — which competes with black cabs, Uber and other car services — announced a deal with self-driving startup Oxbotica to develop autonomous vehicles, with the aim of getting them in service in London by 2021.

“This represents a huge leap towards bringing autonomous vehicles into mainstream use on the streets of London, and eventually in cities across the United Kingdom and beyond,” said Graeme Smith, CEO of Oxbotica, in a statement.

Ruter, the mass-transit company for the Oslo metropolitan area, is about to start testing autonomous buses in the Norwegian capital.

Its recently signed agreement with Danish company Autonomous Mobility involves several pilot schemes and, in the longer run, tests of a fleet of up to 50 vehicles.

Ruter says detailed plans are being worked on with the goal of having autonomous vehicles in traffic as soon as possible, and that means early 2019 at the latest.

Apple received a patent on Tuesday for a suite of autonomous vehicle technologies that it's calling Peloton.

A big part of Apple's Peloton patent involves autonomous cars using a "connector arm" to physically contact the vehicles in front of and behind them to share battery power.

Apple says that its Peloton technology could be used with as few as two self-driving cars, but with more vehicles sharing wind resistance and battery power, the more efficient the group becomes.

One of the problems with an interconnected train of self-driving vehicles is of course that not everyone in the Peloton would be going to the same destination. Apple has a solution for this whereby the vehicles would communicate with one another and organize the Peloton based on each car's distance to its destination.
