Distribution yards play a key role in the supply chain, keeping trailers full of freight moving quickly in the space between the warehouse doors and public roads. The Germans, pioneers in developing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), are taking a step-by-step approach to releasing new technology, waiting for their own engineers, rather than the general public, to validate their system.
Both approaches – one conservative and one radical in nature – are designed to push highly automated driving on to public roads, a step that could massively reduce accidents, since computers have faster accident-avoidance reflexes than humans.

Mercedes does not allow members of the public to test still-experimental systems. Its engineers need to pass an eligibility exam to become test drivers, and another one for testing automated driving systems, the carmaker said.

“We do not want blind trust. We want informed trust in the car. The customer needs to know exactly what the car can and cannot do,” a Mercedes spokesman told Reuters on the sidelines of the carmaker’s test track in Immendingen, Germany.
“The worst thing would be if the car gets into a complex situation and there was ambiguity over whether the car is in control or not,” he said.

One of the first broadcast Roborace events didn't go quite as planned for one of the teams participating. Just as Acronis SIT's self-driving race car was set to take off from the starting line, it decided to bin itself straight into the wall. An expensive opportunity to learn and reflect.

The first half involved a lot of hype, but we also saw a prototype autonomous race car complete a lap around the Thruxton circuit in England, which is a massive accomplishment on its own.
But for those that wanted to see competition start to heat up, it didn't quite happen as planned.

Tesla has now officially increased the price of its Full Self-Driving package to $10,000 in the US.
That’s quite a price for a model that most closely resembles a Kickstarter campaign.

Tesla is selling the software package to customers with the promise of later delivering a system that will fully able to drive the vehicle by itself, and it claims that it will keep increasing the price in the future.
Now, Tesla has already delivered some features under the package, but it wasn’t always the case. Most of the features already delivered used to be under Tesla’s previous Enhanced Autopilot package, but Tesla later moved them to the FSD package.

In order to boost the take rate for the package, Tesla has been announcing price increases and encourage buyers to take advantage of lower prices.

Electrek’s Take
It’s certainly a strange Kickstarter-like approach for such an important product, but it looks like it is working.
Even Electrek’s Seth Weintraub who has been skeptical about Tesla’s ability to deliver a truly self-driving system pulled the trigger this week — just in case Tesla actually delivers the system and he can avoid the price increase.

However, I don’t like the most recent price increase. Musk previously said that the price increases would be linked to new features and capabilities being released under the package, and I don’t think this limited beta release should count as that.

Earlier this week, Daimler announced a partnership with Alphabet’s Waymo autonomous vehicle unit to use Waymo Technology. Daimler purchased Torc Robotics, a Virginia-based automated driving technology company, in March 2019.

Fortunately, an engineer from the Singapore Institute of Technology—the team that entered the car—was able to chime in and give the world a better understanding of where everything went wrong.

One of the four SIT engineers said in a Reddit comment, "The actual failure happened way before the moment of the crash, on the initialization (sic) lap. [...]
They continued, "So during this initialization lap something happened which apparently caused the steering control signal to go to NaN and subsequently the steering locked to the maximum value to the right. [...]

While the vehicle was being driven on its human-operated initialization lap, the failure occurred and remained while the car transitioned into autonomous mode. The engineer confirmed that the vehicle telemetry reported back the invalid data, however, it was not flagged as being invalid and was missed by the vehicle operators.

But even if these drivers are careful at the outset, they may become complacent over time.
