Uber Advanced Technologies Group has resumed testing autonomous vehicles in San Francisco, two years after the company scaled back its testing program following a fatal crash in Arizona that killed a pedestrian.

Uber ATG ended all testing on public roads after one of its vehicles struck and killed pedestrian Elaine Herzberg in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe. Uber ATG was testing its self-driving vehicles in the Phoenix area, Toronto, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.
Testing on public roads started Tuesday and will only be conducted during daylight hours, according to Uber. Each vehicle will be staffed by a safety driver.

“We are excited to resume autonomous testing in Uber’s home city this week. Our testing area will be limited in scope to start, but we look forward to scaling up our efforts in the months ahead and learning from the difficult but informative road conditions that the Bay Area has to offer,” an Uber spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Neolix Technologies, a self-driving logistics startup based primarily in Beijing, today confirmed that it closed a roughly RMB 200 million ($29 million) series A+ financing round in February of this year.
The company said that the proceeds will be put toward ramping up mass production of its self-driving vehicles, which Neolix claims could help reduce carbon emissions while boosting transportation logistics efficiency.

Neolix is one of the countless startups developing autonomous delivery vehicles that are level 4 as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, meaning they’re completely self-driving in some or all situations.
They detect and avoid obstacles using a combination of sensors and HD maps captured with “centimeter-level” accuracy, and they travel up to 100 kilometers (~62 miles) on a single battery charge on roads with inclines up to 20 degrees at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour (~31 miles per hour).

Washington, DC (CNN)The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is calling for the creation of safety regulations of partially automated driver assistance systems, like Tesla's Autopilot and GM's Super Cruise.
The organization, which is funded by the car insurance industry, recommended increased monitoring of drivers to ensure they're engaged, prohibiting automated lane changing and restricting the use of these systems to the roads they're designed for. Mitsubishi Electric has developed a compact light-detection and ranging (LiDAR) solution incorporating a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) that achieves an extra-wide horizontal scanning angle to detect the shapes and distances of objects ahead in autonomous driving systems.

The new LiDAR solution irradiates objects by laser and uses a dual-axis (horizontal and vertical) MEMS mirror to scan for the reflected light, generating three-dimensional images of vehicles and pedestrians. Mitsubishi Electric expects this compact, low-cost solution to contribute to the realization of safe, secure autonomous driving.
Mitsubish says that the MEMS mirror can be produced in large quantities on a silicon substrate using semiconductor-processing technology, making it suitable for mass production.

The groups are then ranked on a map with axes for strategy and execution.

Waymo is also halting testing on public roads in California.

However, Waymo will keep some operations up and running, notably its truly driverless vehicles, which don’t require a human safety driver, according to an announcement on its website Tuesday. These driverless vehicles are used in the Phoenix area as part of Waymo’s early rider program that lets vetted members of the public to hail a ride.

Waymo has thrown open its latest self-driving car data set, inviting autonomous vehicle researchers to take part in a set of competitions based on the plentiful data gathered by its driverless fleet. The Waymo Open Dataset Challenges comes as the Google spin-off adds 800 new segments to its multi-sensor dataset, and it could come as a good distraction if you’re stuck at home because of coronavirus self-isolation.

The dataset itself is a bundle of high-resolution sensor data, which Waymo’s vehicles have collected as they roam the roads in various locations.

Waymo has also labeled some of that data, such as for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and road signs. “While this dataset is not reflective of the full capabilities of our sensor system and is only a fraction of the data on which Waymo’s self-driving system is trained,” the Alphabet company says, “we believe that for research purposes this large, diverse and high-quality dataset is extremely valuable.”

"NTSB Blames Drivers, Tesla, Lax Regulations in Florida Crash

DETROIT — The National Transportation Safety Board says two drivers, Tesla and lax regulation of new partially automated driving systems are to blame for a fatal 2019 crash in Florida involving a Tesla on Autopilot.

The NTSB, in a report issued March 19, said the design of the Autopilot system contributed to the crash because it allowed the Tesla driver to avoid paying attention. Tesla also failed to limit where Autopilot can be used, allowing drivers to activate it in areas it wasn’t designed for, the report said.

The board, which investigates crashes and makes safety recommendations, also took the unusual step of accusing the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of contributing to the crash. The agency failed to make sure automakers put safeguards in place to limit use of electronic driving systems to areas where they are designed to work, the report said..."

While other industries struggle, Liu Zhiyong says China’s virus outbreak is boosting demand for his knee-high, bright yellow robots to deliver groceries and patrol malls looking for shoppers who fail to wear masks.

ZhenRobotics’ flagship model is the six-wheeled, 68-centimeter-tall (27-inch-tall) RoboPony. The self-driving cart is sold to retailers, hospitals, malls and apartment complexes.
Unlike airlines, hotels and other industries that face a long and uncertain struggle to recover, Liu said his orders have tripled since the outbreak began.

“Robots can make up for this vulnerability and provide services people can trust,” he said. “Trust in robots has been enhanced dramatically.”
The RoboPony, which is controlled through a mobile phone app, can carry 40 kilograms (90 pounds) and travel at up to 10 kph (6 mph). Liu declined to say what the robot costs.

Upon completion, the 20-square-kilometre open area in the Yongchuan district of the city is expected to be able to host spontaneous test drives for over 100 Level 4 autonomous cars, covering all urban driving scenarios.
Level 4 autonomous vehicles are cars that can achieve fully autonomous driving but might require human intervention in some circumstances.

Known as a Chinese city with high levels of traffic congestion and camera surveillance, Chongqing also has some challenging urban features for motorists, including hills and lots of building with extensions.

Driverless cars are becoming more and more of a reality, and with safety measures, testing and training them becomes a priority.

A team of researchers from MIT has created a simulation system to train driverless cars in real-world contexts, helping them learn how to navigate through worst-case scenarios.
Their findings were published in the journal IEEE Xplore.
Control systems that are currently used to train autonomous vehicles largely rely on real-world datasets from human drivers. However, real-world situations can be much more hazardous, involving near-crashes or being forced off of the road or into other lanes.

In their tests, a controller that had successfully undergone the VISTA simulation was able to be safely set out in a completely driverless car and drive down previously unknown streets. The system was put through a number of test near-crashes and was able to fully recover and keep control of the car.

Anthony Levandowski, the star self-driving car engineer who was at the center of a trade secrets lawsuit, has filed a motion to compel Uber into arbitration in the hopes that his former employee will have to shoulder the cost of at least part of the $179 million judgment against him.

The motion to compel arbitration filed this week is part of Levandowski’s bankruptcy proceedings. It’s the latest chapter in a long and winding legal saga that has entangled Uber and Waymo, the former Google self-driving project that is now a business under Alphabet.

“For much of the past three years, Anthony ceded control of his personal defense to Uber because Uber insisted on controlling his defense as part of its duty to indemnify him. Then, when Uber didn’t like the outcome, it suddenly changed its mind and said it would not indemnify him. What Uber did is wrong, and Anthony has to protect his rights as a result,” Levandowksi’s lawyer Neel Chatterjee of Goodwin Procter said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch.

Autonomous delivery startup Nuro has been granted a permit to begin driverless testing on California’s public roads, paving the way for the company to roll out commercial operations throughout the state.

The driverless permit allows the vehicles to operate at a maximum speed of 25 mph and only in fair weather conditions on streets with a speed limit of no more than 35 mph, the DMV said Tuesday. The permit covers nine cities, including Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and Woodside.

“The safety of the motoring public is the DMV’s top priority, and we do not give out these permits lightly,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said in statement. “Nuro has met the DMV’s requirements to receive this permit to test their driverless delivery vehicles on California’s public roads.”
While 65 companies have an active permit to test autonomous vehicles with a human safety driver, Waymo, and now Nuro, are the only companies allowed to operate driverless vehicles on California’s public roads.

Tesla Robotaxi has been a top priority for Elon Musk lately. He recently confirmed a leak through his Twitter handle regarding the functionality of the Model 3 Robotaxi.
He also revealed several hidden features of the upcoming self-autonomous electric cars.

There is a dashboard camera in all Tesla electric cars, whose purpose was vague until Elon revealed it on Twitter recently. Its primary goal is to record videos of passengers inside the cabin.
As these taxis will be driverless, the objective of these cameras is to check if any passenger harms the interior of the car and to ensure their safety as well.

This is most likely for Robotaxis, if they vandalize your car, it's on camera and they'll pay for the damage and possibly get charge criminally.

Tesla Robotaxi Is Not Coming Soon
However, he tweeted today that Robotaxi vehicles are contingent on regulatory norms. Allowing Tesla Robotaxis on such a large scale is a big decision, one that requires stringent testing. Even the slightest mistake can lead to an accident.

Although Musk believes in bringing Robotaxi by the end of 2020, considering his recent tweet, it seems it will be a long process.
