Waymo, the autonomous vehicle business under Alphabet, sent an email to customers of its ride-hailing app that their next trip might not have a human safety driver behind the wheel, according to a copy of the email that was posted on Reddit.

The email entitled “Completely driverless Waymo cars are on the way” was sent to customers that use its ride-hailing app in the suburbs of Phoenix. It isn’t clear if the email was sent to members of its early rider program or its broader Waymo One service.
A driverless ride is what it sounds like. No safety driver behind the wheel, although a Waymo employee would likely be present in the vehicle initially.

As part of its big robot push for upcoming the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Toyota says it will have 20 of its e-Palette electric vehicles on-site to transport athletes.

Each of the vehicles will travel through the athletes' village at a leisurely 12 miles per hour along a designated loop. As an SAE Level 4-capable autonomous vehicle, the e-Palette will be able to navigate the area all on its own. However, a safety attendant will be onboard each vehicle to ensure nothing goes wrong.
The company will also have a smaller version of the vehicle, called the Field Support Robot, at throwing events to move shot puts and javelins.

"[Automated decision-making] technology has great potential to transform the efficiency of industry, as well as public and private services, however, as with all technology, it is prudent to explore how to mitigate any possible risks," said Minister for Education Dan Tehan.

Autonomous electric delivery truck startup Einride raised $25 million in a Series A investment round it said would help expand the Sweden-based business into the U.S.

Einride last year partnered with logistics company DB Schenker to start operating the Einride vehicle in a recurring industrial operation, the company said. Earlier this year, the company operated an autonomous electric truck on a short route on a public road in Sweden between a shipping terminal and a warehouse.

“Our ambition is to disrupt the transport industry and closing our series A brings us one step closer to that goal,” Mr. Falck said. “The funding will allow us to start expanding in the U.S., deliver on our technology road map and to meet rapidly increasing customer demand.”

Waymo and Renault are working with the Paris region to explore the possibility of establishing an autonomous transportation route between Charles De Gaulle airport and La Défense, a neighbourhood just outside of Paris city limits that plays host to a large number of businesses and skyscrapers, including a large shopping center.
This is part of the deal that Renault and Nissan signed with Waymo earlier this year, to work together on potential autonomous vehicle services in both Japan and France.

This route in particular is being explored as a lead-up project to potentially be ready in time for the Paris Olympic Games, which are taking in place in Summer 2024. The goal is to offer a convenient way for people living in the Île-de-France area where Paris is located to get around, while also providing additional transportation options for tourists and international visitors.

As a followup to 2017's Concept-i, the Japanese automaker debuted the Toyota LQ ahead of the auto show later this month. Unlike the Concept-i, the LQ appears far more grounded in its approach -- and it will be ready for public trials next year.

Although the LQ, a Level 4 self-driving car, looks a lot like the Concept-i, it does arrive with very, very slight tweaks.

Audi may not take to the skies nearly as quickly as once thought. Although the German luxury marque appeared to be headed toward a flying taxi at full speed with Italdesign and partner Airbus, those plans are now on the back burner.
In a Monday report from Automotive News Europe, Audi told the publication it's "working on a new direction for our urban air mobility activities and have not yet made a decision regarding potential future products.

The decision curiously comes after Porsche, also under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, revealed a Boeing partnership for premium air taxi travel in the future. It's unclear if this decision to suspend work at Audi is related.

Self-driving technology has the potential to increase road safety, as some dramatic video from Tesla and others has shown. However, the dark side of it has made bigger headlines thanks to notorious accidents during autonomous operations in Uber and Tesla vehicles that resulted in fatalities.

As such, Lyft has joined Ford, GM, Toyota and Uber as a core member of the Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC), created in April 2019 with the goal of boosting self-driving vehicle safety. Membership in the group will allow Lyft to "align [with industry leaders] on frameworks for safety, share best practices and foster cross-sector collaboration," it wrote in a Medium post.
Lyft thinks it can make a valuable contribution to the group, thanks to insights gained from the millions of rides per day on its platform.

Just how Android is the operating system for a number of mobile phones, Tortoise wants to be the operating system for micromobility vehicles, its co-founder Dmitry Shevelenko, who previously served as Uber’s director of business development, told TechCrunch.

Using autonomous technology in tandem with remote human intervention, Tortoise’s software enables operators to remotely relocate their scooters and bikes to places where riders need them, or, where operators need them to be recharged. On an empty sidewalk, Tortoise may employ autonomous technologies while it may rely on humans to remotely control the vehicle on a highly trafficked city block.

“There are big daily operating expenses with the repositioning of scooters using cars and vans,” Shevelenko said. “Not only is that very expensive, but it ends up undoing a lot of the environmental benefit of shared electric scooters.”
For the operators, they’ll need to install about $100 worth of equipment on each scooter in order to run Tortoise’s software. That includes two phone cameras, a piece of radar, a processor and a motor. If it’s a two-wheeled vehicle, Tortoise requires the addition of robotic training wheels. All of this is included in the reference design Tortoise provides to operators.

Self-driving truck company wants to test without ever using public roads

The self-driving competition has recently extended to autonomous trucks, and unbeknownst to many, drivers are already sharing the road with these test mules, albeit with humans usually on board in case something goes wrong.
The people at Ike Robotics have a different approach to using public highways. In a 90-page self-assessment safety report Ike filed with the NHTSA, Ike describes a series of simulations and private track tests to get the company’s trucks to a level safe enough to merit public road use.

Ike has been making all of its testing and data gathering public in an effort to be transparent to the public. On its website it lists a complete inventory of its test fleet, license plate numbers, and VIN numbers of the tractor rig. Ike has also posted a map of all the roads that the manually driven fleet travels as well as safety and compliance scores from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Ike will eventually test on public roads, but it intends to wring every ounce of information out of its current methods so as to minimize risk and maintain the highest testing standards.

Deeproute.ai is the newest company to receive a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test autonomous vehicles on public roads.

The company has research centers in Shenzhen, Beijing and Silicon Valley and is aiming to build a full self-driving stack that can handle Level 4 automation, a designation by the SAE that means the vehicle can handle all aspects of driving in certain conditions without human intervention.
Deeproute.ai is also a supplier for China’s second-largest automaker Dongfeng Motor, according to TechNode. The startup plans to offer robotaxi services in partnership Dongfeng Motor for the Military World Games in the city of Wuhan next month.

The trip, if successful, will be among the first for full-size seafaring vessels navigation the Atlantic on their own, which ProMare is opening will open the doors to other research-focused applications of autonomous seagoing ships.

IBM has provided technical support for both the research and the navigation aspects of the mission, including providing its PowerAI vision technology backed by its Power Systems severs, which will work with deep leearing models that it’s developing in partnership with ProMare to help with avoidance of obstacles and hazards at sea. It’ll use RADAR, as well as LIDAR and optical cameras to accomplish all this.

Sony's Sociable Cart SC-1 -- the autonomous vehicle-cum-party bus designed for theme parks and golf courses -- has finally landed. Launching in Japan's Kanucha Bay Resort in Nago City, and the Botanical Garden in Okinawa City, the pilot scheme kicks off with a night-time "Moonlight Cruise", where passengers will be treated to magical night-time scenery and supernatural starry skies, all shown on the cart's internal high-resolution display.

As we've previously reported, each cart can carry five people in comfort, and relies on sensors to make its journey, thus eliminating the need for windows.
Sony -- in partnership with Yamaha -- has hinted at using AI to optimize these ads for passersby based on things like age and gender, but right now it seems to be focusing mainly on the passenger experience, and says it plans to roll out the Sociable Cart to other entertainment venues soon.

Getting to 1 million indicates the company is on its way to verifying its technology — showing that it’s reliable and safe. That’s key for getting regulators to accept cars in the streets with no person at the wheel.

Yandex plans to expand its self-driving fleet to 1,000 cars within two years from about 50 now, which will enable it to run 1 million miles a week, Dmitry Polishchuk, head of Yandex’s autonomous business, said in an interview.
Yandex is working with regulators to allow a pilot project in two cities — Innopolis and Skolkovo — to test rides with no engineer on board, he said. Now, when people there order a self-driving ride from the Yandex.Taxi app, an engineer sits in the front passenger seat with a red, emergency button.

The crash involved a Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle that Uber was using to test self-driving technology and was a blow to the entire autonomous vehicle industry and led other companies to temporarily halt their testing.

KT and Hyundai have tested their real-time traffic navigation technology on 5G networks for autonomous cars, the companies announced.

The South Korean telco, Hyundai Mobis -- the parts and services arm of Hyundai -- and Hyundai Mnsoft -- an IT solution provider for automobiles -- worked together to conduct the test.
The real-time traffic navigation technology that was being trialled sends traffic data collected by cars to a server. The server then updates the map used by cars in real time with the data collected, and then sends that information to other cars for safety.

During testing, the video of the first car coming to a sudden halt was also sent to passengers of the third car via 5G network. This was done through using Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology that sends car data to handsets and adjacent sensors.
KT and Hyundai said the technology would increase safety for autonomous cars and could also be used to detect jaywalkers.

StreetWise, a collaborative research project led by FiveAI, announced that it will soon begin the U.K.’s largest test of self-driving vehicles on public roads.

The consortium is part of an ambitious program launched two years ago by the U.K. government to encourage development of transformative mobility technologies that would make the country a global leader in next generation transportation modes. The goal of StreetWise is to lead research around the technology of autonomous vehicles, develop methods of validating their safety, and create models for insuring and service them.

“Shared, self-driving vehicle services promise a better way for people to get around, we’ll be working with forward-thinking partners to make these services a reality in European urban environments,” said Stan Boland, cofounder and CEO of FiveAI, in a statement
“The untapped potential of self-driving vehicle technology is huge — it could enhance road safety, tackle isolation, and create economic opportunities,” said U.K. Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps in a statement.
