But one autonomous vehicle, which hit the roads in Finland this week, is designed to go anywhere in any conditions.
It’s called Gacha, built by Finnish vehicle manufacturer Sensible 4, which focuses on self-driving car software for all-weather operation.

According to the Espoo, Finland-based company, Gacha is the first autonomous minibus that can navigate both city streets and small, unmarked suburban roads under all imaginable weather and lighting conditions.

The bus can change its route based on user requests. For example, a person living half a mile from a route can make a request in an app to hop into the bus. Gacha will then optimize its route to pass by that person’s door, sending an alert so the passenger can be outside just in time.

Two words for you: flying taxis. That's right. In the not-so-distant future, you'll open your ride-hailing app and, in addition to ground options like car, SUV, scooter or bicycle, you'll see on-demand air flight.

Either way, it won't fly itself anytime soon, experts say. One seat will be reserved for the driver-pilot.
"If air taxis are going be what everybody wants them to be — thousands at a city, for example — we won't be able to find enough conventional pilots," said Carey Cannon, chief engineer of technology and innovation at Bell.

While no flying taxi exists yet, Uber has dared to estimate the "near-term" cost of that San Francisco to San Jose trip: $43.

TomTom has some key advantages over its arch nemesis Google in terms of cars, autonomous or otherwise, and that’s to do with the richness of its real-time traffic data sources TomTom can access.

Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Transportation, Elaine Chao, has worked hard to avoid placing regulatory barriers in the way of self-driving cars. But Chao's boss is a driverless car skeptic, Axios reports.

One Axios source had a conversation with Trump in 2017 where he mentioned owning a Tesla with Autopilot technology. According to the source, Trump "was like, 'Yeah that's cool but I would never get in a self-driving car... I don't trust some computer to drive me around.'"

On another occasion, Trump reportedly said, "Can you imagine, you're sitting in the back seat and all of a sudden this car is zig-zagging around the corner and you can't stop the f---ing thing?"
Trump has reportedly dismissed the concept of driverless cars as "crazy," preferring a human driver to be in control of any vehicle he's riding in.

In its quest to roll out the country’s first commercialized fleet of autonomous trucks, TuSimple has added an improved camera and vision system that lets its vehicles operate at night and in low-light situations.

Sensing technology is core to any driverless vehicle, but whereas other companies use lidar to map and measure obstacles by bouncing light off of them, TuSimple is focused on a more comprehensive set of technologies.
TuSimple claims that its vehicles have three-centimeter control precision even in inclement weather.

“We weren’t able to find a camera system on the market that fit our needs, so we created one,” TuSimple president Dr. Xiaodi Hou said in a statement. Hou claims that TuSimple’s perception system “sees better than the human eye,” a statement he’ll no doubt expound upon at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC) this week in San Jose.

Waymo is opening another technical service center in the Phoenix area, an expansion that will allow the autonomous-vehicle technology startup to double its capacity in the area as it prepares to grow its commercial fleet.
The new 85,000-square-foot center will be located in Mesa and is expected to open sometime in the second half of the year. The company’s existing 60,000-square-foot facility in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler will remain.

I’m an optimist. I’m even a bit of a risk-taker. But I can’t say that we’re going to see anything beyond more beta tests of self-driving cars in 2019.

Throw-in all the more recent data collected by Google and -- especially -- all those Teslas on Autopilot and nearly all the kinks have been worked out of having cars drive themselves. Still, it won’t be allowed to happen because people are going to die, mainly because of idiot drivers.
The problem isn’t with the self-driving cars, it’s with the cars that aren’t self-driving, cars that are driven by idiots like me.

I’m guessing that most cars from 2020-on could be self-driving with only a software upgrade, which is why Elon Musk is predicting Tesla will have full autonomy by the end of 2019. But notice that Elon isn’t predicting Tesla will be allowed to have its cars drive themselves everywhere.

If you work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, you could be one of the first consumers to ride in a self-driving car in the state of New York. That’s thanks to autonomous vehicle startup Optimus Ride, which today announced its plans to deploy self-driving vehicles to the 300-acre development in Brooklyn. The development houses 400 businesses that employ 9,000 people.

New York’s state law pertaining to the testing of autonomous vehicles has been renewed through April 2019. While NY state has yet to allow any operators to deploy self-driving vehicles for commercial purposes, Optimus Ride is able to do so because they will be on private roads, versus public roads.

“We are excited to announce not one but two self-driving vehicle deployments today,” Optimus Ride CEO and co-founder Dr. Ryan Chin said in a press release. “Working with leading developments and communities like Paradise Valley Estates and the Brooklyn Navy Yard enable us to further our mission to transform mobility [...]"

Tesla Inc filed a lawsuit on Thursday against a former engineer at the company, claiming he copied the source code for its Autopilot technology before joining a Chinese self-driving car startup in January.
The engineer, Guangzhi Cao, copied more than 300,000 files related to Autopilot source code as he prepared to join China’s Xiaopeng Motors Technology Company Ltd, the Silicon Valley carmaker said in the lawsuit filed in a California court.

Separately, Tesla lawyers on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against four former employees and U.S. self-driving car startup Zoox Inc, alleging the employees stole proprietary information and trade secrets for developing warehousing, logistics and inventory control operations.
Several companies are racing to develop the technology required to make cars drive on their own and lawsuits against former employees have become common as firms strive to keep proprietary information in-house.

The afternoon commute of Reddit user Beastpilot—who requested that we not use his real name—takes him past a stretch of Seattle-area freeway with a carpool lane exit on the left. Last year, in early April, the Tesla driver noticed that Autopilot on his Model X would sometimes pull to the left as the car approached the lane divider—seemingly treating the space between the diverging lanes as a lane of its own.

Then in October, it happened again.
This week, he posted dashcam footage showing the same thing happening a third time—this time with a recently acquired Model 3. After working correctly for months, his new Tesla shows a tendency to swerve toward the lane divider as it passes this particular exit.

"The behavior of the system changes dramatically between software updates," Beastpilot told Ars in a Thursday phone interview. And he argues that makes the system dangerous.

A recent patent application details how its R1 self-driving vehicle could carry smaller robots to cross lawns or climb stairs to drop off packages. The company has even taken the step of trademarking the name “Fido” for delivery services.
Another section of Nuro’s patent shows the R1 delivering piping hot pizza and beverages, prepared en route in automated kitchens.

As automated technologies mature, companies are focusing less on simply getting around and more on how services will connect with actual customers. Delivering goods instead of passengers also means fewer regulations to navigate.

If a vehicle is making its intentions clear, Autopilot appears to make that car stand out on your instrument cluster and slow down to create a space.

Autosteer is now intelligent enough to warn you if you're going to run a red light while the system is in use. It won't bring the car to a stop, but it could grab your attention in time to hit the brakes. Tesla says the system works by cross-referencing its mapping data and the computer vision system from its cameras.

While creating self-driving car systems, it’s natural that different companies might independently arrive at similar methods or results — but the similarities in a recent “first of its kind” Nvidia proposal to work done by Mobileye two years ago were just too much for the latter company’s CEO to take politely.

Amnon Shashua, in a blog post on parent company Intel’s news feed cheekily titled “Innovation Requires Originality, openly mocks Nvidia’s “Safety Force Field,” pointing out innumerable similarities to Mobileye’s “Responsibility Sensitive Safety” paper from 2017.

It’s not required for rival companies to be civil with each other all the time, but in the research world this will almost certainly be considered poor form by Nvidia, and that can have knock-on effects when it comes to recruiting and overall credibility.
