Apple will lay off 190 employees in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale in its self-driving car division, the company said.
The layoffs were disclosed, along with new details, in a letter this month to the California Employment Development Department. CNBC reported last month that layoffs were occurring in the self-driving car division, known as Project Titan.

Most of the affected employees are engineers, including 38 engineering program managers, 33 hardware engineers, 31 product design engineers and 22 software engineers.

Uber wants to bring the trial of its flying taxi play down under, telling a House Infrastructure, Transport and Cities Committee on Thursday that it just needs Australian governments to work alongside the Silicon Valley darling to make that happen.

"The economic modelling is quite extraordinary, we would see that at the time of launch, it would be equivalent to the cost of an Uber Black -- the premium luxury car service," Wilder said.

Wilder proposed that he expected Uber to conduct flight demonstrations as early as 2020 before the service becoming commercial available in 2023.
"On-demand aviation has the potential to change the way we think about urban transportation, and radically improve urban mobility by giving people back time lost in their daily commutes," Uber wrote in its submission [PDF] to the inquiry.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. authorities are investigating a fatal Tesla Inc Model S crash in Florida last Sunday that killed the driver and caused a massive fire, the second fatal Tesla crash in the state this week being probed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Saturday...

[#1] The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Monday the 2016 Tesla Model S caught fire and burned the 48-year-old driver beyond recognition. The newspaper said the Tesla battery repeatedly caught fire after being transported to a towing facility.

[#2] A report on Friday’s crash released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department did not indicate if Autopilot was engaged in the crash that killed the 50-year-old Tesla Model 3 owner.

The report said the Tesla struck a tractor trailer and the roof was sheared off as it passed underneath the trailer and stopped three-tenths of a mile south of the collision. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene..."

An analysis from Georgia Tech researchers found that systems used by self-driving cars to detect pedestrians had trouble picking out people with darker skin tones.
They found "uniformly poorer performance of these systems when detecting pedestrians with Fitzpatrick skin types between 4 and 6," which are darker skin types.

There are several factors that could lead to inaccurate results, like time of day or clothing color. But they found that solely based on skin color, accuracy dropped an average of 5 percent for pedestrians with darker skin. If a system doesn't identify a person as a pedestrian, they're more at risk of being hit because the computer doesn't know to predict their behavior.

As Uber and others continue developing prototypes and concepts for flying taxis, at least one tire company is thinking outside the box on a way to transition from ground to air and back again.

This week at the Geneva Auto Show, Goodyear unveiled its “Aero" concept tire. The wheel is designed to rotate vertically when the car is on the ground and horizontally while flying. The Aero is made from a flexible material and does not need inflating.

Goodyear also says fiber optic sensors and a built-in AI monitor road conditions and tire wear. The AI could also provide vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to better assess traveling conditions and recommend a course of action — allowing a vehicle to adapt to a flying or driving mode.

To reach those ambitious goals, the ridesharing company, which hopes to go public later this year, was spending $20 million a month on developing self-driving technologies.

The current head of Uber’s self-driving technologies, Eric Meyhofer, testified that Uber’s original estimates of having tens of thousands of AVs in a dozen cities by 2022 were “highly speculative” “assumptions and estimates.”
The newly unsealed document also reveals that Waymo claimed Uber’s alleged misappropriation of its trade secrets had accelerated the commercialization of Uber’s autonomous technology by over three years and 10 months.

Uber reported a net loss of $865 million in the last quarter of 2018, and has never made a profit.
