    my neighbor gave me dvd rom came from same pc as mine dell dimension 310
    I thought i would add it to mine. big mistake after installing it,my computer did not recognize either drive.My original drive showed up in device manager with yellow flag.did not show in my computer window.followed troubleshooting advice,looking for filters.But there were no filters.Disconnected new drive threw it away.After hours of replugging,and rebooting old drive showed up.device manager says its fine.But it will not play
    any of my discs.Error says change monitor settings which I did to no avail.Hope you can help.

    When you boot your computer there's a brief message stating which key enters you into setup, or BIOS. Since I suspect it'll be f2 that's the key you must repeatedly tap during the boot screen. You'll see instructions for how to navigate. Find the screen that specs your drive - might be the first.

    Something like this perhaps - the top entry?

    Dwnld, extract and run the 1.6.1 here. Type what it says in the open box up top and include the firmware version.

    Sorry to interrupt,,,,,how about simply restoring the PC either via Windows restore or (hopefully) an image to a state before the problems began?

    Let's backup a sec. Is the drive still listed with a problem in device manager?

    When you say "it doesn't play" - to which program are you referring?

    What "does" or "doesn't" happen when attempting to play?

    Go ahead - answer bgoodman while you're here.

    I tried restore And drive disappeared.Undoing restore brought it back.
    Global,Device manager shows no problem.When i say it doesn't play I mean in windows media player. I can play discs in VLC media player.While I'm here I want to thank you for your great patience with me,As you see i can really confuse you.I act before thinking and when i think it's not good either.Thanks again.When Itry to play on wmp it tells me to go to settings and lower it.Which doesn't work.

    Sounds like an issue with Media Player not the drive. Try reinstalling MP, that may do the trick. I expect GlobalForce will have more comprehensive suggestions as he is far more knowledgeable than I am.

    Open the player Frank. Goto "options" ==> performance tab and drop the video acceleration slider to none.
    Clk (IMPORTANT) apply ==> OK, then reboot and update us whether there's playback. *I'm think'in video.

    PS - When you come back up check and make sure the slider setting held.

    ========================

    No good? Save this standalone (second on your left) to the desktop.

    Open and goto hardware up top. Select video ==> video info.

    Goto edit ==> select all.

    Edit again ==> copy, then paste with your reply.

    *Don't do this part till you've done the first!
