The agency was subjected to a significant cyberattack in the early hours of Christmas Eve, its executive director confirmed.

David Pirie said that while core regulatory, monitoring, flood forecasting and warning services continued, communication into and across the organisation was significantly impacted.

“The attack is impacting our contact centre, internal systems, processes and internal communications.
“Our Emergency Management Team is working with Scottish Government, Police Scotland and the National Cyber Security Centre to respond to what appears to be complex and sophisticated criminality.

SEPA Systems Knocked Offline by ‘Ongoing’ Ransomware Attack

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has confirmed it is responding to an ongoing ransomware attack launched by a highly organised, international cybercrime group.

Last week, SEPA revealed that business continuity arrangements had been enacted and that it was working closely with the Scottish Government and law enforcement to resolve the issue.

Currently, exact details on what data has been stolen are unavailable. However, early indications suggest this could be information related to “a number of business areas”, the agency said.

“Some of the information stolen will have been publicly available, whilst some will not have been,” said Terry A’Hearn, Chief Executive of SEPA.

A’Hearn also revealed SEPA has been working closely with specialists from the National Cyber Security Centre throughout the incident.
“Partners have confirmed that SEPA remains subject to an ongoing ransomware attack likely to be by international serious and organised cyber-crime groups intent on disrupting public services and extorting public funds.”

On the heels of a ransomware attack against the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), attackers have now reportedly published more than 4,000 files stolen from the agency – including contracts and strategy documents.

After hitting SEPA on Christmas Eve with the attack, cybercriminals encrypted 1.2GB of information. The attack has affected SEPA’s email systems, which remain offline as of Thursday, according to the agency. However, SEPA, which Scotland’s environmental regulator, stressed on Thursday that it will not “engage” with the cybercriminals.

“We’ve been clear that we won’t use public finance to pay serious and organized criminals intent on disrupting public services and extorting public funds,” said SEPA chief executive Terry A’Hearn in a statement.

Sepa cyber attack recovery could take years

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) had more than 4,000 digital files stolen by hackers on Christmas Eve.

Chief executive Terry A'Hearn revealed it is now building a new IT system from scratch.

Mr A'Hearn told BBC Scotland: "I think this a process that will take a year or two.

"We had reform aims anyway, we were going to build a new IT system progressively over five or six years.
"This is an opportunity we didn't want provided by criminals, but we've decided to fast-track that and will build that in one or two years."
