I ran latest adaware again then downloaded hijackthis per instructions after getting answer to my plea of 4-1 to avoid recovery disk woes. Below are results.

    PROBLEMS I HAVE:
-I get a lengthy “permission denied” message when I try to use most of my system tools like “defrag.” (although I am able to defrag with a non-windows software).
    - Even though I create a new Administrator ACCOUNT in Safe mode and give myself privileges to do everything, I get the same no permission message when I reboot and try to get into the tools files.
    - When I try the F10 disc recovery command, I end up with “User part not found. Partition will be created etc.” But when I click OK I get “cannot create user partition. System recover cannot continue.”
    - At startup I get a message something like “Mssvc has encountered a problem and needs to close.”
    - After running AdAware, it tells me to disable “C\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-458573308-1249257218-1443\SYSTEM32\mssVC.exe,” then reboot. I tried this a number of times but it doesn’t go away.

I have had a few viruses in the past. Is it possible that one of them has permanently corrupted some of my files?

    Hi hans29,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50046
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)

    O4 - Global Startup: Date Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\Date Manager\DateManager.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: hp center UI.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Download CWShredder and run. Be sure ALL other windows are closed and use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

Then reboot in Safe Mode and delete the following:

    C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\ <--entire folder
    C:\Program Files\Date Manager\ <--entire folder
    C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe
    C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Also empty out your Recycle Bin while you are in safe mode.

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Thanks, Kent, for the quick reply. I followed your directions, scanned again with Hijack, downloaded and used CW Shredder, got into Safe Mode but couldn't find the first three files you asked me to delete so I thought I had better check back with you before going any further. I looked with both Windows Explorer, Search and under C:\Programs. I couldn't find C:program Files\Date Manager at all; Couldn't find C:progra~1\Toolbar at all: I found C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar but that's where it ended. No ShadowBar.exe to delete. Am I missing something in your directions or ----? Will be looking forward to your reply. Hans29.

    Hi hans29,

If you can not find them they may be a hidden files.
To "unhide" hidden files and folders:
Launch My Computer from the Desktop Icon.
    Select View, Details.
    Select the Folders button.
Select Tools, Folder Options. Then select the View Tab. Select the Show hidden files and folders radio button is selected
and that the Hide file extensions for known file types check box is unchecked. Once this is done, select Apply and then
Like Current Folder (located near the top of the Folder Options box). Then select OK.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Just got back in town and thought I had better get back to business seeing as you are up and running again. I just ran ad-aware and the hijackthis software. Below are the results. As I indicated earlier, I can't defrag or run most of my system tasks. I get mssvc.exe error whenever I boot. I can't use the F10 recovery method in XP and I frequently get "permission denied" sort of messages. I have the recoveery disks but am reluctant to use them. Please help. Thanks

    Hi hans29,

    Reboot into safe mode.

Click Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Internet Options >> and under Temporary Internet files Click Delete Files >> Delete all offline content >> OK.

    Then empty your Recycle Bin.

Now reboot and post a new HJT log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    hello Kent,

Below is the latest hijack file. I went right from Start to Control Panel. There wasn't a "settings" indication. Otherwise, all went well although when I rebooted I ended up in the Safe mode again and had to undue the Safe mode setting in Boot.Ini to end up with the regular screen.

    Hi hans29,

This is a new variant of the msg121.dll problem that has now evolved to using totally random file names and changing other items in your system also. The work for a fix is still in progress and due to the differences between XP Pro and Home, a workable solution for XP Home is still being researched. Hopefully we will have a solution soon.

    Regards,
    Kent
