Is it recommended to leave the option 'Only scan for known file types' checked or should I uncheck it?

Not really sure, I've always left it checked.
Perhaps it would scan more of your system unchecked but i'm sure that would also slow down the scan time.

When I used it, I did NOT check it.
    It scans All files,
    takes more Time,
    but offers increased security.

what about the first 2 options:

ignore files larger than 4 mb
    ignore non-executable files

    ?

I think many of the default settings are based on what the software creators perceive as file categories that may not harbor any malware in order to quicken the scan time interval. For a more thorough scan, you should remove all of the check mark settings.

    I disagree.
Removing all off them would not give you a more thorough scan.

Some are there to improve the scanning ability

I agree with the previous post. What I actually meant was to remove the check marks from the specific options previously cited in the original post. I erroneously made an "across the board" response. :argh:
