What exactly is the remote registry service needed for in push installations?

I ask because it is listed as a requirement and I have observed push installs work on computers w/ this service disabled yet often run across computers where simply turning the service back on enables an otherwise failing push install...

    What is the deal here?

And what about XP Home which doesn't come with remote registry...is it not possible to do a push install to a XP Home client?
