Desktop has some years / mileage on it. Plan to give it new life via a restore (from an IFW image) to a point shortly after purchase. All is prepared. I’ll take another image before attempting (in case something goes awry). I’ll be restoring Windows 7 to a post SP1 state. I’m scheduling better part of a day to get everything installed / configured. Re: Windows updates (as some have had horrible experiences), and there will be a LOT of them. Any suggestions to ameliorate the process?
Bob, follow this LINK very carefully. Rather than accept anything from Windows Update, go get the updates themselves and install them if that option is offered. The above link shows you where to get the SP1 update as well as the special "convenience" rollup update and its associated files needed to get you to May 2016 from 2011. From there, you should be able to use the standard Windows Update to finish the process up. It's long... but nowhere near as bad as it's gonna be if you try and use Windows update for the whole process... that'll take you at least a week if not more and most likely will fail along the way.
Thanks, Frog I'll examine the link. (Late 2012 machine came installed w/SP1, so at least I don't have to deal with IT.)
I believe all that stuff is now gone from both the Windows Update source as well as the cumulative Rollup offered to get you to May 2016... I have not seen it anyway while using those facilities.
I suspected that the (usually eschewed) Windows 10 offer had been discontinued, but wasn't sure whether it was deliberately deleted from the Rollup. Cheers
