Since my children introduced me to PCs when they were in HS (between 94 and 04) I've never really had any type of malware infection. I have had to restore from an image three or four times in the last two or three years because of serious issues with new software or MS Windows patch Tuesday installs. But what about malware? Can some of you relate what happened and if your PC was functional enough to recover with a saved image. Or is recovery from/with an image not possible. Thank you!

    Greetings, Ratchet!

I have recovered from many MalWare infections, especially in the early days of my "hunting trips." I occasionally run a Honey Pot (malware attraction environment) and go after malware, primarily to determine their infection vectors.

There has never been a case in my experience when I have not been able to recover my system with a backup image... BUT, the backup image must be complete. By that you need not only the disk/partition image but also the MBR and the rest of Track 0 if you wish to deal with any possible infection.

There are also BiOS malwares but I have never seen one in my travels across the infecting infobahn.
