rescue cd changes drive letter

Hi,

my setup is a 3 partition hd master (C:,D:,E: ) and a 3 partition slave (F:,G:,H: ). When booted from the rescue CD it displays that partition D: is the 1st partition on the 2nd drive. So TI8 does its own letter assignment. While this is not a big threat, it might lead to confusion when things go wrong (i.e. you have to restore from your backup).

Is there a way to make drive letters 'sticky' also for the rescue CD?

Source of the Problem

Microsoft Windows® assigns letters to disk drives according to a set of rules. The rules are not always obvious or intuitive, but they are consistent. And once you understand them, you can predict the impact of adding, removing, or partitioning a drive.

Understanding the rules can also help you add or remove a drive in a way that causes the least disruption in your drive letter assignments. If you've already added or removed a drive and found that the drive letters have changed, you may want to start over again with these rules in mind. You can use Device Manager to pre-assign drive letters, for example, or manipulate the types of partitions you create using FDISK, so you can maintain (or return to) your existing drive letters.

Rules for assigning drive letters

Here's the list of priorities Windows uses by default to assign drive letters.

* Floppy drives are assigned to A and B.
* Drive letters are then assigned to each additional drive, starting with Drive C, in the following order:
o The Primary partition on the hard disk set as Master on the Primary IDE channel
o Primary partitions on other IDE hard disks, starting with the Slave on the Primary IDE channel, then the Master on the Secondary IDE channel, then the Slave on the Secondary channel and so on for any additional IDE channels.
o Primary partitions on SCSI hard disks, starting with the lowest SCSI ID first.
o Logical drives defined in the Extended partition of the disk that is assigned as Drive C.
o Logical drives defined in the Extended partition of any subsequent hard disks, in the same order as above.
o Any optical drives (such as CD-ROMs) in the same order as for hard disks.
o Logical drives defined in the Extended partitions of any removable media drives.
o Drives that use drivers in the CONFIG.SYS file.
o Networked drives that are mapped as local drives.

I don't know of any way to get Linux (the Recovery CD operating system) and Windows to assign drive letters the same way.

What I do is to name the partitions to avoid confusion. A partition named BOOT is pretty obvious as is BACKUP or DATA, EXTERNAL etc., and these names will be the same in Linux and Windows.
