    Hello,

I have been renting a Zyxel VMG4381-B10A modem/router/wireless unit from my ISP cincinnatibell.com zoomtown.com . I just have a basic dsl 30 Mbps connection. I've been thinking of just getting my own modem/router unit to avoid the rental fees and have more control over my own equipment, connection, and security. In the future fioptics will be available and if I get it I will probably opt for the 250 Mbps connection.

Can anyone recommend a specific brand and/or model to replace what I have now ? I think what I have now is a special unit used by my ISP I do not think I can buy a consumer direct version of that particular Zyxel, but I could be wrong. In the past I have always used the units supplied by the ISP and it was just a matter of turning it on, changing the passwords and connecting to the net. I probably should have made more changes to tighten security though ?

Any advice on what I need to configure the new unit for internet connectivity and security would be appreciated. I think my WAN type is PTM and the encapsulation method is IPoE. I need to know what data I need to enter to get it connected to the net. I'm new to setting up my own modem, router, wireless, and have mainly just learned a little from reading the Zyxel VMG manual and logging into the web configurator and looking at the settings.

    Thanks,
    John

Do you feel it's worth it to buy your own DSL modem and then have to buy another that supports fiber-optic? When is that fiber-optic line coming? Is your current provider the only one in your area? Anyway, it looks like you can get affordable Zyxel modems on Ebay. I would just check with the ISP to confirm that you can use your own modem and ask if they have any criteria you have to meet; they will need to activate it after you get it hooked up. Hope that helps.
