Report: Surface Duo coming to Germany soon

We reported yesterday in rumours that Microsoft is moving ahead with the international release of the Surface Duo, with reports that British carriers are in communication with Microsoft about the handset.

Now we have a new report, from German site WindowsArea.de, that the handset is also heading to Germany soon.
According to their sources, the device will hit the market there sometime in Spring 2021.

Currently, the Microsoft Surface Duo is only available in the USA, though a number of fans have already imported the device all over the world, from Japan to Europe.

Microsoft has announced that it is to roll out its Android-based Surface Duo device outside the US for the first time. The company confirmed today that the dual-screen Android device is coming to Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, with full details of pricing and availability available at the beginning of 2021.

In a lengthy puff piece on the Microsoft blog, the company also confirmed that an ‘enhanced’ version of 2020 mega-app TikTok is now available in the Google Play store, which takes advantage of the second screen. Other enhanced apps include Amazon Kindle (which lets you use the Duo as a ‘book’ that opens) and Spotify.

Microsoft's Surface Duo has received monthly updates since its launch up to this point. But this December will break away from that trend. Microsoft is pushing back any Surface Duo updates until people are back from the holidays.
Microsoft did not comment on the exact reason for the delay, but it's likely related to the holidays.

Microsoft’s first Android device, the Surface Duo, was unveiled back in 2019 and went on sale later in 2020. While the device debuted an interesting form factor, the specifications were underwhelming for its price, thanks to the dated internal and lackluster camera performance. Now, images of what is believed to be the successor to the Surface Duo have surfaced on the web.

The leak was featured on a YouTube video from ‘Tech Rat’ showing off the device and providing an interesting look at the camera array. The images suggest that the Duo 2 houses a triple-camera system, in line with what is now becoming a bare minimum in smartphones. The first-gen device shipped with just a single underwhelming 12MP unit.

Zac Bowden from Windows Central also confirmed the legitimacy of these images, providing further credence to the leak. Bowden adds that the array might include an ultra-wide-angle shooter, a telephoto lens, and a standard main camera. This makes the device more potent in the photography department, possibly justifying being priced like a flagship.

Surface Duo owners have been complaining that Microsoft Launcher, which is a big part of the shell of the dual-screen device, has not been seeing significant updates in recent weeks.

It appears this may be because Microsoft is looking to release new features as part of the release of the Surface Duo 2.
On Twitter Vishnu Nath, Partner Director of Mobile at Microsoft, confirmed that new features are on the way, but not set to be delivered right now.

The main improvement of the Surface Duo 2 is expected to be an improved camera cluster, and modernised specs such as 5G and the Snapdragon 888 processor. It seems we can also expect new software features also.

New FCC documents cleared on September 17 filed by Microsoft are likely for Surface Duo 2.

The documents confirm 5G, NFC, Wi-Fi 6, and a "Wireless Power Transfer."

While it could be Qi wireless, it is more likely inductive charging for a Surface Pen.

New FCC documents released on September 17 reveal some more details about the upcoming device, although photos, schematics, and in-depth descriptions are withheld until January 2022.
While most of the data, filed under C3K1995 (C3K is the grantee code for Microsoft, 1995 is the FCC product code), are drab test results, there are a few details that confirm this is Surface Duo 2.

For one, it's referred to as a "portable handset" throughout the documents. There are multiple references to various "postures" for testing the device, including "flip and flat." The device has 4G and 5G capabilities. [...] there is also mention of "Wireless Power Transfer," aka fancy FCC speak for wireless charging.

An alternative theory to Qi wireless charging is that Surface Duo 2 may support inductive charging for a Surface Pen akin to how Apple's iPads can recharge the Apple Pencil with it magnetically sticking to the device.

Surface fans this week have spotted a new Surface Neo cameo in Netflix's just released "Red Notice" movie starring The Rock, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds. The movie, which has been in development since 2019, is the second piece of entertainment media to feature the now "postponed indefinitely" Surface Neo, after WandaVision featured the product earlier this year.

Now, before you get your hopes up, the appearance of Surface Neo in a newly released movie does not mean that Microsoft is ready to release Surface Neo again.

If Surface Neo ever does ship, I very much doubt it'll be the same product that was announced in 2019. I would suspect Microsoft will give it a new chipset and update the design to match the latest Surface Duo at least, and that assumes Microsoft still deems there to be a market for very pricey dual-screen PCs. People have scoffed at the pricing of Surface Duo, and the Surface Neo was only going to be even more expensive.

Microsoft’s next foldable Surface phone won’t be a dual-screen device, according to my sources who are familiar with the company’s plans. After a long year of hardware prototyping and experimentation, the company has decided to pivot over to a more traditional foldable design, with a 180-degree hinge, internal foldable screen and external cover display, similar to devices like the Vivo X Fold and Honor Magic Vs.

I’m told this new foldable device came about after the company had already finalized a dual-screen design for Surface Duo 3. This original dual-screen design was supposed to ship at the end of 2023 as the next Surface Duo, featuring narrower and taller edge-to-edge displays, wireless charging, and other improvements.

It’s still too early to know the exact specs that this new foldable device is going to feature hardware wise, or whether or not Microsoft plans to simulate a dual-screen experience via a software feature or mode.
