I've used various free VPN, virtual private network. Hamachi is nice but it also depends on what you want to achieve. Paid, Symantec pcAnywhere.

    Free: logMeIn.
It bypasses firewalls without requiring configuration changes.
The host has a service running and you will be able to access the host from any computer with a browser.

How safe is such a product?
I understand that I only provide a password to someone trusted or use it myself remotely (and I guess I usually trust myself  ). Are there specific steps I should take to prevent unauthorised use of the software, any leakage of information while in use?

I use a couple, all of which are free.

    1) Use the built in Remote Desktop Connection with Windows

    2) Single-Click - A VNC based client that allows 1 way connection with easy setup.

3)* Crossloop - The simplest and easiest way to connect. A very small installer, no setup required. All you have to do is tell the other peson the access code and boom, you are in.
