i currently use nero 6 with no problem, but im looking to make a switch.

i would prefer if the program offered verification and if the latest version was made in 2006.

also prassi ones is not an option, i have had problems getting it to work. i prefer not to use NTI or Easy CD Creator either. any suggestions?

    Hi,

Then you would seem to be out of luck in that dpt then. I use Nero, Roxio and I can't even remember the last time I had a problem after a CD was burned.

Wait wait, yes I remember when I had WinME... or was it 98? ;)

Not sure this will meet your requirements but
I have been using cdBurnerXpPro 3 for awhile
now and think its a decent program.

Although I use Nero on my desktop, I have Sonic DigitalMedia Plus on my laptop and it does verifies on copying and burning data. I haven't had a problem yet.

Two potential hurdles: I think this is the same outfit that makes Roxio software - not sure, but it's NOT Easy CD Creator, the other is that some would classify this as Dell crapware simply because it came installed on my laptop from Dell-- well, tough! -- it works for me.

    Hi,

Here's the information from the website

    # Writes all kind of mediums apart from double-layer DVD (follows in next version). Burning video-DVDs is limited.
    # Burn audio-CDs with and without gaps between tracks
    # Burn on the fly / Burn-proof
    # Supports most IDE, USB, Firewire and SCSI drives
    # Rip Audio-CDs to harddrive, obtain track-information (ID3-tags) from Internet
    # Burn and create ISO-files
    # Customizeable with many settings
    # Data verification after burn, create bootable discs
    # (will be) available in multiple languages
    # 100% freeware - no adware or restrictions
    # bin/nrg->ISO converter, simple cover printing and
    much more!
    # Operating systems: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003 Server.

    http://www.cdburnerxp.se/features.php

    They mention data verification.

Nothing new in 2006 that could displace my Nero 6.6.0.3. Nero 5.x was probably the best, but it would not support the latest DVD writers.

Nero 6.6.0.3 can also verify the data. Put a check mark next to VERIFY WRITTEN DATA when Nero is checking the disc (prior to burn operation).

Ashampoo looks okay, but I don't see a DVD backup tool similar to Nero Recode.

Like Nero, it allows you to copy movies (or whatever) as long as it's not copy-protected.

So Ashampoo can transcode a DVD9 to a DVD4.5? What about the other features found in Nero Recode?

Is there a .PDF manual for this application?

It can't do everything that Recode can, but it does everything I need. It won't cost you anything for a fully functional 30-day trial, so why not check it out yourself? Btw, the entire program consumes only 23MB.

Will DEFINITELY checkout the program. I'm a HUGE fan of efficient software encoding. Recode permits the user to set the START and END points of any commercial DVD.

I got Nero StartSmart v6.6.1.4 and Nero ShowTime for free along with my DVD/CD-rewriter (BenQ) and I also trialed Nero 7 Premium (more than 500MB download. Pffft).
I couldn't find anything wrong in v6.6.1.4, but Nero 7 Premium failed once in burning a CD properly.
So, I'm not planning to buy Nero.

500mb huh? looks like u downloaded the multilanguage version. the english version is still 100megs tho.

with version 7 out, im concerned for version 6 which has been more reliable for me.

Perhaps it was, but it doesn't really matter for me. What matters to me is that it failed burning a simple CD.
I look it this way. Whatever the many possibilities are in Nero, if it can't burn a CD properly after so many years of development, I get my doubts.

well i tried install cdburnerxp pro but it requires .net framework 1.1 which i dont have. i have .net 2.0 so i can use paint.net but im not gonna bother with 1.1.

i tried ashampoo burning studio and i like the gui very much. its as close to nero express as u can get. unfortuneately, it uses about the same resources too. im gonna burn a disc now, if it works, i may keep this program.

I'm also looking for a software like Nero, but it's not my priority #1 right now.
In the future I need a DVD/CD software that allows me to remove parts in a recorded movie on TV, like advertising and burn it on another DVD as a movie without interruptions. I hope you understand what I mean. :D

Fwiw, Ashampoo just released Burning Studio v6.20 today.

    New in v6:
    - Multi-disc file backup and restore on CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs
    - Create compressed backup archives with powerful password protection
    - Split archives automatically across multiple CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray discs
    - Restore archive contents to their original locations
    - Integrated Audio CD ripper – store your audio tracks as WMA or WAV files
    - New option for setting the number of copies you want to burn (available for all disc formats)
    - Discs can now be verified immediately without being ejected first (if the drive supports this feature)
    - Numerous other small improvements that make the program easier to use and more effective
