You can also just install the trial version of TI 11, create the TI CD and then do the restores with it. TI 11 has some problems so you may want to try it before you buy it.

I would recommend updating DD to the latest build.

I just opened up DDS "About" and I notice that it indicates build 2117. I also opened TI9 and it indicates build 3677. As I indicated in the privious post I have a update 2160 for DDS in my files and an update 3854 for TI9. When I have updated other software in the past the build number would change. Is that not the case for Acronis products or did I simply fail to update the software? Perhaps I just downloaded the updates and didn't use them.

The build number should show the correct installed build so they may not have been installed. If TI 9 (3,677) works okay for you, I'd continue with it and not install build 3,854.

It sounds like the best thing to do would be to install XP on each partition. I would be nice to have TI 11 but if it is buggie I don't want to run the risk of problems in the future with it.

Do you think that I need to clean out the partition more than what the XP cd will when it formats the partition or do you believe that it is clean enough with the procedure of installation?

A quick format of the partition during the XP installation is plenty to "clean" the partition.

Remember, you can use TI 9. You would just need to edit the boot.ini files for the "copied" partitions. This can be done using DD or a previously installed Windows if it can see the new partition.

Either way you decided to do it, remember to make a backup image of the drive after you get the first XP installation setup how you want it. That way you can quickly revert to that point and try again if something goes wrong.

I am game to give it a go.

As I understand I would install XP in the first partition, then copy the first partition into the second, third and forth partition. Then I would change the boot ini in the first partition. Then I would set the second partition as active reboot to that partition and change the boot ini in that partition and so on. Then I would create an image file of each partition and be able if problems occur restore from each partitions image file.

How would I change the boot ini?

I assume you would be starting with a completely unallocated drive (no partitions) or at least one with no Windows partitions (except for the first one).

If you're going to use DD to copy the partition, you would do the following:
    1. Clear the drive of all partitions.
    2. Boot to DD and create the first XP partition as Primary/Active.
    3. Boot to the XP CD and install XP (do a quick format of the partition during the installation).
    4. Once XP is installed and setup how you want it for the copies, boot back to the DD CD.
    5. Copy the XP partition to a new Primary partition (XP2).
    6. Copy the XP partition to another new Primary partition (XP3).
    7. You can now create the small OSS Logical partition. (You'll need to caluclate the partition sizes to allow for your setup).
To change the boot.ini files, you can Explore the partitions with DD, find the boot.ini file and edit it. You can also boot back into your XP partition (the first one) and use Notepad to edit the boot.ini files on the other two partitions.

The first XP partition will be ...partition(1), the second one should be ...partition(2) and third one should be ...partition(3). However, if you don't clear the drive of partitions before you begin, your values could be different if the Logical partition ends up in slot 2 or 3 of the partition table.

I should tell you that I am in the process of passing a kidney stone so I may not jump to this immediately. Will you be checking this site again in the next few days? I will try to do something with it today but latter.

thank you again for all your help.

Don't feel rushed on my account. I usually have the forums up every day, though usually less on the weekends. Whenever you get around to it is fine.

    Hi,

The last time I used the boot disc I had a usb mouse. I think. At that time I had to hit F11 and type in "quietusbmouse=off" and the mouse would work. Now I have a Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 and it does not work when I type in "quietusbmouse=off". Is there something else I may type in that will allow my mouse to work?

    thank you

    Hi,

I just tried "acpi=off noapic" and that allowed me to move my cursor up and down but not to the right and left.

    thanks

Try all three parameters: acpi=off noapic usbmouse=off

Check if the computer's BIOS has a Legacy USB option and try it Enabled if it's not.

If you have a standard USB or PS2 mouse, you could hook it up while using DD/TI and see if it works okay.

You could also try the Safe Mode version if using DD or if using TI and your image is on an internal drive.
