Love it or hate it: TikTok is extremely popular all over the globe. The short video platform has millions of users, and many companies are trying to cash into this popularity.

Now, Reddit has announced that it has acquired TikTok rival Dubsmash for an undisclosed amount.

Dubsmash will continue to maintain its platform and brand, with the entire team including its three co-founders brought over to Reddit as part of the deal. In the future, Reddit says that it plans to bring the teams from their respective companies closer together so they can collaborate to create engaging experiences.

Another key advantage for Reddit is that with its increased focus on video content, the acquisition will allow it to integrate Dubsmash's technology in its own platform to further aid content creators and drive engagement.

Reddit will shut down Dubsmash on February 22nd, 2022. The announcement comes less than a year after Reddit acquired the TikTok-like video platform for an undisclosed sum in December 2020. Following the 22nd, Dubsmash won’t be available to download through the App Store or Google Play, nor will the app work after that date.

When Reddit first announced the acquisition, it said Dubsmash would retain its own platform and brand. “Combining forces has been a perfect match. Reddit is where passionate communities come together for timely, interactive and authentic exchanges about topics that matter to them, and video is increasingly core to how people want to connect,” the company said in a blog post.

Well I have heard of Reddit and TikTok. I have not heard of Dubsmash.

I have a Reddit account, got tired of it rather quickly. I spent some time watching TikTok (never created an account), mostly garbage in my opinion.

I think the design of Reddit and TikTok are horrible, can't believe they got so successful.
