recommendations for a firewall?

Any recommendations for a free firewall with my current setup? Thanks!

 

Windows firewall is fine, why change it?

 

from what i understand it is fine for blocking incoming, but not outgoing

 

If you are running Vista the Windows Firewall works for both incoming and outgoing. Kind of a PITA to configure, though.

 

Windows firewall isn't fine in/out bound protection..

PC Tools Firewall Plus
Comodo IS but you can install the firewall only
Online Armor Free

 

What makes you think it isn't fine? Because it's from Microsoft/not popular or because of bad experiences?

Maybe PCTools is a good choice.Because it has LNS's kernel.It is really good.

 

I've seen Vista Firewall Control
posted about on this forum before. A search should find the threads. It is an application to de-PITA the setting up of the Vista firewall.
And from what I understand, the firewall itself is quite strong. Also interested to hear if tipster has an explanation for the comment. Maybe you were thinking about XP's firewall? (Which is great, inbound only.)

To the OP, if you install a two way firewall you can probably forget about the need for the keyscrambler.

 

Been using myself Vista Firewall Control for a week now, it takes care of all the outgoing of the firewall so no need to configure anything (which is not easy btw if you don't have the program).

I had Comodo Firewall installed, and needless to say I wont go back, not because it's not good, but because Windows Firewall is so light, as effective, and easier to use so i will definitely not bloat myself with additional resources usage.
Off course it is not as technical and easily customizable as Comodo (you won't see thousands of options), but if you have a hips/BB, it will give you all the protection you need.

This statement is inaccurate, a firewall doesn't prevent you getting keyloggers, and KeyScrambler is by far the best protection.

 

Both good choices and either would compliment your current setup nicely, IMO.

 

No I don't think like that. I depend on Microsoft to have issues otherwise I won't be working. So Microsoft keep on doing what you do best!

The internal firewall is okay but you can get ghostwall and some add-ons for the firewall to put in the missing modules needed. But third party doesn't always work so well.

 

Yes it's from China.. I know but hey it works very well.. You need the one that is marked rfwfree.exe you do not want rfwfree09.exe. If you go that route..

 

I have been happy with Online Armor.

Yes, but nothing said about the software, only about their market policy.
I'm more interested about the software performances than their market behavior. And I guess a lot of people also.

 

I have no desire to try Rising. Even if it is just their market policy, why take a risk on a company with those kind of ethics, when it comes to the security of your PC? There are too many other solid options out there IMO.

I write about this industry in another place, whether you happen to agree with my articles or not is beside the point. The fact remains that you can point an equal finger at major developers in the USA, Germany, Slovakia and other places who have all exhibited similar ethics. The commercial world in which we live is of our making, not theirs. It's the Japanese car syndrome all over again. If people are worried about their software phoning home for instance best not to connect and be safe.

 

Not all companies behave in this manner. I respect your opinion, but I stand by my statement. I would rather give my businesss elsewhere
