I have heard that it has 'phone-home' component. Is this true, and if so, can it be stopped? If it can be stopped, could someone please detail just how its done? Thanks!

I would guess that it does for UTM updates and several of the modules that require definition updates (mail scanning, virus scanning, web scanning, etc.)

Weird, what's the point of running an UTM if you do not allow it to connect to its data warehouse?

I do not have a problem with it downloading; my problem is with software sending too much of my data to its mothership:

Way too many Big Data nosey nellies wanting way too much information for my comfort.

If you read that link it doesnt say anything about them sending your personal information to them.

    • Sophos Information – version of SAV and hashed data to avoid duplication
    • System Information – OS, Kernel, architecture, distribution (About the UTM version and hardware)
    • On-Access Information – Fanotify vs Talpa and which on-access options are in use
    • SAV Configuration Information – If Web-UI, e-mail or management is being used etc (Makes perfect sense since it needs module updates, definition updates, etc)
    • Server Type Information – The applications in use on this server (Makes perfect sense since it needs module updates, definition updates, etc)

Well, the link I gave was for Sophos Anti-virus, not for the Sophos UTM Free Home Edition. What sort of info the latter collects (if any) could well be vey different from the former. Secondly, the 'System Information' is exactly the sort useful for script kiddies to fine-tune an attack, should they manage to gain access to it. The best policy is to limit data leakage in general, and stealthy 'phone-home' spyware in particular...one reason I shall jettison IE at the first available opportunity. Anyway, the original question stands. Does Sophos UTM Free Home Edition contain similar 'phone-home' component, and if so, is there a way to disable it?

I think it will be better if you as in Sophos XG/UTM forums.
As far as I remember in the XG interface there no option to disable the phone home (if they do it). And of course it will call home for updates.

Come on man!!!! Worry about something that matters. It phones home on every url hit and every 3rd party ad redirect. It is called "Cloud Based Content Filtering" EVERY UTM uses it now. Unless you are doing child porn, fricken move on on your illogical worrying. You will always be tracked on the internet.

One will always be tracked on the internet so long as fools quit their grinning, drop their linen, touch their toes, and invite the nosey nellies to have fun. Wanna know what I consider "funny"? Stupid creatures that let a fart, then rush to report every detail to their 5212 faux friends on Facebook, along with the corporate dirtbags and TLA spooks that also hang on every word. Bad enough such fools have no respect for their own privacy and security...they cannot resist coming to a security and privacy forum to deride others that do. And so far I have yet to see any mention of pfSense or Untangle doing the 'phone home' scenario.
