I've been battling this thing for 4 or 5 days now and finnally came across this great forum. I went to the URL suggeste and it appears that they have a fully automated version of the remover for win2k. Do you recommend using it? Thanks for your input.

    Hi

I've split you off and given you your own thread a sit's very fdifficult to help 2 people in the same thread

first to check which versions of this parasite you have

Please download the KillBox from here:

    http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

UnZip it to it's own folder not to the Desktop or a Temp folder. Click on The KillBox.exe and it will open. Now click find then find msg.dll, then on the little pop up window, that says killbox file list, press file/create log and a pop up says do you want to create a log in notepad, say yes and then save as usual in notepad and copy & paste the resulting list here

    and
so we can se what other nasties are causing you problems

go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HijackThis.exe and download 'Hijack This!'.
make sure it is placed into it's own folder, not a temporary folder. Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

OK, just need to make a couple of comments before pasting the logs. I have been working with XBlock, but so far no good results and they seem not to have been aware of the msg121, which I found by surfing the net. So some thing have been done, including running the uninstall procedure from look2me which doesn't work. I also realized that msg121.dll and msg121.cpy.dll were the problems but of course could not remove them. I did rename msg121.cpy.dll once, but it reappeared.

Having said that, I think things are still OK, but don't know for sure, so here come the logs requested.

I am extremely grateful to this forums support.

    Jim

    THANKS!

I have to admit I was a bit scared when I rebooted after following the instructions. Outlook opened fine and I tried to follow the link in the email to the thread and both IE and Explorer hung or at least appeared to do so. Opened up my SBC/Yahoo browser and it was working, so I relogged in and things were working. So, rebooted and things seem to be just fine. Not sure what caused the burp the first time, maybe the fact that all the temp internet files were gone??

    Anyway, THANKS! THANKS! THANKS! :) :) :) :)

If you would, could you post a new HJT and KillBox log so we can be sure your system is clean?

looks like just these couple of left over entries

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch=res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant=http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50024

but i would also run these to clear up any hidden left overs if you haven't already
Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R279 31.03.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

Hey guys I just wanted to reply and say thank you for the help with this problem. I had this msg121 spyware on my computer and I didn't know why I kept getting popups, ever after I ran adaware and spybot search and destroy. I was going to format my computer today because of it. My firewall caught the thing and then i searched for it in yahoo and this site came up and I used the fix and it worked. Thanks again guys this is a really good forum, it's great that the moderators and users are so helpful and nice. :D

    Hi sv_jim,

I just noticed that you are using an outdated version of HJT.

Please download the latest copy of HJT and use it when you post your next log.

    Regards,
    Kent
