    This is a copy of a message I posted in alt.comp.anti-virus :

My system appeared to be loaded down with virus/trojan/whoknowswhat. So
I tried running the virus removal software off www.eset.com. Now my
win2000 is thouroughly hosed. When I boot up it gets to starting
windows, then that little "loading personal settings" window pops up
for a few seconds followed by a similar "saving your settings" pop up
then folled by "loading personal settings" ( ...etc, over and over )
but my desktop never loads. No task bar, none of the app icons .. not a
thing. Just a blank green ( my chosen background ) screen.

Has this happened to anyone else out there ? Anyone have any
suggestions on how to remedy this situation ? I do not have a rescue
disk ( none came with the machine when purchased ).

Boot into safe mode and look at event viewer. Sounds like the winlogon process cannot start for some reason. Eventviewer might give some clues (for example the service might be disabled isntead of automatic).

If it really is hosed then just install a second copy of Windows to get access to your data, copy all your data off, then scrub and reinstall.

    Thanks for your reply Jim.

Booting safe mode produces the same results only I get a black screen instead of
    the green screen. No desktop.

Have you tried doing a "Last known good configuration" boot?

    Thanks..

I just now tried. Same thing. No desktop. Approximately every 30 seconds the
screen goes default baby blue with "loading your personal settings" pop up,
immediately followed by "saving personal settings" ( all within a split second)
followed by another 30 second interval of my green screen. I wonder how it
knows to change to the green screen (..?).

I wish I had crashed out of my last session following the eset scan. Perhaps
then the current settings would not have been saved. One of the last things following the scan, eset showed the bugs it deleted, but that I had to reboot to remove others which is what I did. But then I could no longer reboot. I suppose
windows saved my (then bogus) settings.

As I also have a linux disk and can see my W2k disk, is there anything that
I might look for ? Being Slackware V11 I cannot write to W2k, but at least I
can look ( I wish I had V12 as I do believe it can safely write to NTFS ).
