I am using Avira 9 free in my home computer (WinXP SP2) & it is running light. I have just Windows firewall on & go for bi-weekly scans with SuperAntispyware.

Recently we have got another computer & my friends are suggesting Microsoft Security Essntials as security suite.
Will MSE give the same protection as any other free AV suite?
Also will it be light on resources?
    Will windows firewall be sufficient?

Any reply from members will be highly appreciated.

Make sure you update your computer to Service Pack 3 for Windows XP

SP2 is insecure and no longer supported.

AVIRA 9 is outdated version . There is a free upgrade to v10.

No problem for MSE if you like it as a program and if you rely on free programs.

Personally I am not a fan of free products and don't think that free AVs alone could provide adequate level of protection , this includes MSE.

    Yes . Why not?

You should take a look at all the programs and decide on your own . Here is a list of Windows legitimate security providers:

Ensure your OS and most used and popular applications are updated .

On Windows 7 64 bit I use both the Windows Firewall and MSE and I have no complaints. No lag or noticeable slowdown.

Some subscription avs are crap and some free are very good.
I don't see being free as a good or bad indicator in how well they work as a category.
