My email program for *many* years is Forte Agent. My web hosting server has upgraded to the TLS 1.2 protocol for email. Agent has not updated and will not work. I'm currently using my server's web mail, but would like to have a 3rd party program where my emails will be on disk rather than stored on a server in the cloud. I'm wondering if anyone uses such a program and feels secure with it. Thanks, -rich
I suppose any mail client that offers POP3 would be an option. Thunderbird would be an option. By default, Thunderbird offers to set up IMAP (remote folders), but there is the option to choose POP3 (keep mail on your computer). I've been using Thunderbird since 2010 with POP3. No adds, no fuss no muss and very customizable. I would recommend the portable version from PortableApps
as an "exploit analyst" you surely know: https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/threat-encyclopedia/malware/TROJ_CARBERP.C/ there exist help, but concerning my responsibility i advise you to change to a current and secure agent. last FA8 build was released 2014. *fixed typo
I agree. I've been using Thunderbird for many years, and it has always been reliable for me. It's free, it's open source, it's extensible with many add-ons and it respects your privacy. And it's very actively developed by a staff of 24 members right now and with a solid financial basis. One additional note: When setting it up I would not choose the mbox but the maildir file format which is more rubust. I've been using it for several years now with 5 accounts.
Another vote for Thunderbird. I only use Outlook because I have to. It is not a very reliable product. I prefer IMAP to POP for its ability to keep a copy of sent items on the server for multiple devices. For 1 device it doesn't matter. Much.
A few years ago, setting up a new Thunderbird installation, I chose the default mbox, not Maildir, because this article still says: "Maildir is disabled by default because there are still many bugs. It is not 100% ready for users." https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/maildir-thunderbird
When my friend send me a picture or pdf as an attachment. I double click the jpg file, which auto-open Irfanview(or your favorite pic viewer programme). Irfanview always runs always in restricted mode Sumatra PDF viewer runs always in restricted mode No matter if you run it directly from your favorite email programme or locally. For office attachment documents, i use online docx viewers to be sure that there's no code injected or so.
You're welcome, Rich. Thunderbird support has many more helpful articles: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and explanations. I've decided to continue with my server's web mail. It's very basic and simple for my needs. I'm retired now, and don't use email as I used to. And No ads. -rich
I was upset to see that Agent wasn't supporting TLS 1.2 and still doesn't support IMAP. It's the best email client ever. So I was also looking for another email client, and disappointed with all I have tried. But fear not, I have found a way to get Agent to support TLS 1.2! Close Agent. Open the Agent.Ini file (located in the Agent Data folder where the emails are stored). Find the line containing AllowedSSLProtocols, and change the value from 0 to 2688. Restart Agent, and it should now work, supporting TLS 1.2.
Agreed. However, there is no free version, so I've opted to stay with my server's web mail which I've been using for a couple of weeks. I no longer read Newsgroups, and since retiring, my email needs are very basic, and the web mail is more than adequate. That value is for Windows before Windows 10 version 1903. -rich
@Rmus : - Like @Buddel I am using Outlook Express Classic (OEC) as well. If you want a simple emailprogram then I certainly can recoommend that program. It's a program that runs well on Windows 7 and all newer versions of Windows (8, 10, 11). The program is still being developed further. E.g. it already supports TLS 1.3 and it is fairly priced. - Storing your emails on your laptop: Well, then you'll have to use the POP protocol in an emailprogram. I personally use - for every emailaccount I have in OEC - a POP and an IMAP account. Having an IMAP account makes it much easier to see what one's ISP puts in the spammap.
Well, I think that article hasn't been overhauled for a long time. As I said, I've been using maildir for several years with 3 POP3 and 2 IMAP accounts with a database going back nearly 20 years without any failures. I think that some bugs are caused by using mbox and maildir in mixed mode - don't do that!
