As most of you i also just discovered (thanks InfinityAz) that Puran is offering Free version (for personal use only) identical to paid one.

I think that deserves an thread dedicated for it. Not just how good is it, but as an reminder for those who aren't aware of this offer.

Free is not the same as the paid for even though the free link says it is.

Yes, I just purchased a license for the desktop about 2-3 weeks ago as I really like the program. Oh well, now I have a free license for the laptop.

Is Puran considered to be one of the best Defrag Apps? If so, is there anything else considered to be as good or better? How good is it/why?

In fact it is the same like they say (version 7.0).

Version 1.0 is from August 2007.

Latest version is 7.0, from January 2010. The FREE features is exactly the same as its commercial version except you do not need to pay for it.

its because you left free some space checked. it will take a few boot ups and you will be back to normal. when you use the free space option if you watch it run it frees up a large chunk of drive space which is used for "windows temp files" trust me it will speed up and be faster than before you ran it

Puran is top notch by all accounts, but whether it's the best depends on what you are looking for. For example, Defrag Express by DiskTrix is faster in my experience, but not as thorough and it does not have a boot defrag option. UltimateDefrag by the same company lets the user decide almost exactly how to arrange files and let's you defrag/optimize some of the meta files Puran and others don't touch, but it may be too complicated for average users and I've read lots of reports about problems with the boot module.

MyDefrag (previously jkDefrag) is preferred by lots of people, but it can also be a bit complicated. Then there's PerfectDisk which is very good at minimizing refragmentation ( = short defrags after the first defrag) and it has all sorts of extra bells and whistles. Vopt is nice too; in quick (VSS compatible) defrag mode it's incredibly fast yet still manages to defrag files some other defraggers miss. Paragon's Total Defrag may be worth a mention for its boot CD/USB and MFT truncation features, and there may be others with unique features or that Excel in some aspect (e.g. DirMS-S or Buzzsaw in terms of gap filling??).

Very interesting. I hadn't heard of this one. It's not typical for a free defragger to include a boot time defrag option. Does it do a good job on the page and hibernation files? I've been using PerfectDisk for a long time and it has always worked well, but now I'm curious :)

I can not use it, it always crashes upon starting. (Win XP 32bit.)
Perhaps it stumbles over the EMBR from BootItNG.

Just tried Boot Time Defrag feature. It did the boot defrag without issues (Win XP SP3 32bit). File placement optimization seems to be good (checked with HighlightSelectedFile v1.9, by RobL in MyDefrag).

I noticed the checked schedule was at start-up and every 30mins.

What do you recommend as that seems like overkill?

How does this compare to the competition like Defraggler, Auslogics Disk Defrag, or MyDefrag?
