I have a general question about VPN extensions, and that is, do they work without you having to install any dedicated VPN apps?

Define safe? Proton VPN has been audited by a third party, proving it keeps no logs. It has Swiss jurisdiction. But they do not use RAM only servers, which mean it does log active connections. Is that safe to you? Me? Nope. I prefer Mullvad, hide.me, or IVPN. VPN extensions are just gimmicks that do nothing but activate a proxy connection. That's the only thing they can do, since it can only affect the browser.

Not for me, but I'm a paying customer and the extension is linked to my Proton account. Perhaps this makes a difference.

OK interesting, I didn't know that an extension could provide a full VPN service. The thing is, most VPN apps look very bloated, so that's why I never installed them on my PC's. Of course Opera and Brave have built-in VPN's which is kinda cool, but the one in Opera never really worked smoothly, years ago.

I have the paid version of Proton VPN, and have not known about the [free] extension for Chrome, in Opera.

So, I went searching for it, and now I have it, too.

To quote Proton VPN, "RAM can be just as easily accessed as hard disks if the computer is on."

Duh, but what about when it's powered off. RAM disk don't exist, others do. If that disk is "erased" on power down that seems more secure than leaving it there, or do they expect their office to be raided? That difference, and the fact that proton doesn't seem to acknowledge that difference matters.

I tried the difference when on and off. As I said above, I have the paid version.

Sure. But if the authorities knock at your door with a search warrant I highly doubt that you are allowed to turn off your computers.
