I currently use Windows 98 SE on an "old" (1999) laptop. Finding security software that runs on it is a bit of a challenge. There are plenty of AV and firewalls available, which is good. Unfortunately, many security products will only run on Windows 2000/XP and up. For example, Process Guard will not run on Windows 9x/ME.

I would greatly appreciate any tips from fellow users of Windows 9x/ME. Have you found some security programs that you like and use? If so, I'd like to hear from you.

Like you said, most good firewalls will run on 98/ME & Most AVs as well.

System Safety Monitor runs on them, I use it on ME myself. SSM is probably the closest thing to Process Guard that will run on 98/ME.

Spybot, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, Ad-aware, WinPatrol, A2 & X-Cleaner all run on 98/ME, and all are free or have free versions. In fact most anti-spyware and anti-trojan programs still run on 98/ME.

A hosts file will work with them, as will IESpyad. Most 'safer' browsers like Firefox and Opera work on 98/ME too.

So you still have some security programs to choose from with 98/ME. Plus your using a less often targeted OS than XP. Most of the hackers (and other trouble makers) are after XP not the older Windows OS's. Hth.

USB stick login and disk encryption

For securing logon to Win98 - you can enter by USB stick or even by smart card (if you have one) - Dekart Logon - www.dekart.com
For creating virtual encrypted disks - Private Disk

    Hi there pcalvert,

Amongst some of the Apps already listed i can also recommend,

WinSonar/WinPatrol/SpybotS+D/SpywareBlaster/Adaware/A2/BOClean/RegistryProt. And also getting some good HOSTS files.

I can add all these too,

Edit and update your Windows HOSTS file - FreeWare
    http://www.aldostools.com/hosts.html

    Phishing/Web Bugs/Registry/StartUp etc etc Protection
    http://www.geeksuperhero.com/index.shtml Free 30 day trial.

    AntiVirus - FreeWare
    http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

    Malicous Script Defender - FreeWare
    http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm

    Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition
    http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html

Realtime physical memory management - FreeWare

If you can get hold of some more Ram to put in the PC that would help too.
