    Well Well

I heard this Idea a Lot and i mean A LOT
i Hear a lot of people saying that " people and Black hatters "
i don't know why i found a lot of them these days
i think it's the law of attraction
anyway i found a New Black Hatters who claims to Protect his computer
without any antivirus software  not just this he claims that he can protect his computer without a firewall

any way i heard a lot here and there about surviving without an anti
any way i don't think that he is Better than meridok , EPx0f , sUBs ,cudni etc.. and other security Guys who encourage us to use those software
but i wanted to share this Tale with you
anyway he could be bluffing or it could be true

so anyone can shed a light on this incident
or maybe discuss the probability of surviving without an anti virus

so what do you think o_O?

LOL. What a can of worms. Care to define "protect his computer" a little better?

I can protect my computer with a baseball bat.

    Anyways, good for him!

Perhaps security software would not be recommended so highly if we were all Black Hats.

As I understand it, there are many choices other than just antivirus and firewall, and people here tout them all of the time.

You could browse with a virtual machine and if you downloaded any files you wanted to save you could transfer them to the host machine. At the end of your web session just roll back to a previously created snapshot and your odds of being infected would be much lower than they would be if you were to use your main machine with an antivirus. Just one possibility.

Any OS since XP has a built in firewall. Plus I would not connect ANY machine to the internet without a router. Plus if you don't have any services listening on open ports, there is nothing to get in to. Check it yourself with a port scanner. If anything is open close it.

You can manage without a software just being behind NAT if you know what you're installing and what not.

The OP's question/story can be both true and bogus at the same time. :D

Security is more than antivirus and firewall. There are lots of other options, e.g.
    - Policy (rights) management, deny execute by default, virtualisation
    - Third party trust (signing, certificates) and reputational trust (trusted download sites and application markets)
    - Safe hex user practise and surfing/usage habits

I used to go with my motor bike on amateur track days, sunday evening closed track competitions and never had an accident. I once was driving in a outskirt of a nice city with wide lanes and lush gardens. I wrecked my bike, because some one made an illegal U-turn. When I had been driving with the same concentration as on the circuit (which in itself poses more risk), I would have evaded the car-driver easily (he was looking for an address and thought he had missed it and turned without looking).

So true or bogus, who is to tell? :p

It's not "protect without software" it's "protect without antivirus software"

plenty of users on here run without AV's. I myself run without one.

My firewall on my router is also enough for me and if I weren't paranoid I'd remove the software firewall on my laptop.

Yeah it's all in what you know. A computer can be well protected without an AV if you know what you are doing.

IMO a computer can be better protected WITHOUT an AV whether you know what you're doing or not.

Take DefenseWall. That's a common-senseless application. It keeps applications separated and restricted and there's no blacklisting/ realtime antivirus. Light on resources and incredibly effective. And you can literally install malware to the computer (ie: something someone with no sense would do) and it would still protect you.

You still have to know what you are doing or at least keep up with this stuff. Most common joe's don't know DefenseWall exist. I agree that DefenseWall will keep you well protected. Some people run DefenseWall by itself and never get infected. :thumb:

I know. I'm just saying that there is the potential to have software that protects a user without common sense coming into play. If that software were built into the OS and distributed silently no one would really know/care but everyone would stay secure.

i asked him he don't
