When I insert my day-to-day flash drive into a usb port, it is recognized by the computer as a removable disk. When I try to open it to access the files, I get a message to insert a disk into the drive.

I tried it in several computers and get the same message. Also, if I insert a different flash drive, it works normally - so it seems to be a problem with this particular flash drive.

I'd like to pull some files off this drive before ditching it. Is that possible to do or am I SOL?

    What OS are you using?

When you say you try to open it, how are you attempting to do that? What approach are you using?

Do you have "Disk Utility" on your system?

Your problem could be that the Volume/File System on the USB Flash Drive is another type of file system than your system, and you need to mount it in another way.

Disk Utility may be able to help you identify these items, and mount the flash drive.
