After reading Bellgamin's posts in https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=276982 I thought I'd like to try a HIPS with PrivateFirewall I have installed on one of my XP machines.

I like Malware Defender and Real-Time Defender but I'm not sure which one would be best or if one of them would conflict with the HIPS (DSA) in PrivateFirewall.

    Recommendations?

Since all three are programs with HIPS its possible that any of these would conflict with any other. In my opinion you should pick only one of these. Real-time Defender is not bad but is a bit dated, requires the most work to set up and lacks file protection so either Privatefirewall or Malware Defender should be better choices. Between those two Malware Defender is more powerful and offers almost limitless possibilities for configuration but it also requires more knowledge to configure correctly, and it generally produces more popups. Privatefirewall is overall still a pretty solid choice. It lacks the granularity of Malware Defender but is also a bit easier to work with.
Still, the best thing would be to try each of them and decide for yourself.

File protection in what way? I use RTD with XP boot and have it set to protect certain folders and files.

DSA is not PFW's only HIPS capability.

I didn't realize this. So much for my thought on adding MD or RTD.
Thank you all for your input.
