I would like to install a copy of Vista Ultimate onto my drive so I can Evaluate the product. I have 10 Gig of unallocated space on my drive. What procedure should I take. What precautions should I take? I am running windows 2k pro.

    Thanks

    Re: Preparing for visata !

I've just been messing around with this same thing (except with XP Pro instead of 2K).

    Some general notes:
Don't use DD to make/format the Vista partition, it's not compatible.
Vista will take over the booting of XP if it finds it. It's probably the same for 2K. It will be linked to that partition which could cause problems if you need them separated later.

What I did to keep things separate was to backup up drive (I multi-boot 2 XP's and 2 Linux), deleted all the partitions. Let Vista create and install it's own partition (I used @150GB). Then I restored my other partitions from my TI backup and resetup my boot manager.

I think 10GB is way too small to evaluate Vista. I only have a few programs installed and my space is already over that. I think 30-40GB would better to have some wiggle room.

If you have a spare drive you could install Vista on that and not use your existing drive. Keep in mind that if you install Vista on another internal drive it will still take over an existing XP boot partition even though it's on another drive.
