I have been lucky enough to have been given a second hand Dell latitude 3510 i5 10th gen. It was on Win 10 Pro, so I did a clean Win 10 Pro install and then updated it to Win 11 through Windows updates. (it kept my local account that way, no Microsoft Account needed) Not had a machine as new as this before (or Win 11) so was a bit un prepared for the 'Power on Lid Open' feature which means the machine starts when you open the lid even if you have FastStartup/hibernation etc turned off. Took me all morning to realise it wasn't a broken machine) Do most of you turn that feature off in the BIOS ? I'm liking Win 11 so far
Here is the info on this for Dell machines. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/...er-on-lid-open-feature-on-your-newer-notebook
No. Have 2 laptops, a HP and a Cyberpower custom built, and both have that feature on. When the lid is opened, the password screen shows up. However, I do turn off, via the power switch, both laptops at night.
I don't like the feature at all. What's the point of disabling fast startup etc if it is overridden by the machine? Thanks for the input.
1) That is a neat feature and present on all Dell laptops including their Alienwares. 2) You don't need to do an upgrade from 10 to 11 in the future as upgrades sometimes do not work 100% without bugs. Any Windows 10 license will also work with Windows 11 and vice versa so you can simply install a clean version of Windows 11 if you ever run into any issues and it would get activated instantly the moment you get on the internet as it reads the product key from the BIOS. 3) How to setup Windows 11 with a local account instead of a Microsoft account: https://youtu.be/M8iu7r2KWfo
I don't think it overrides Fast startup being disabled. It just simulates pressing the power button. Fast startup has all of that horrible hibernate functionality that makes your PC unstable when you turn it on. While not actually making it start faster (in my experience). It's easy enough to disable in the BIOS. I leave it on because if I am opening the lid, I am about to turn it on. I always power it off before closing the lid though.
@Spartan Yes I know about how to upgrade to 11 from 10 using different ways, and the licence being auto activated. Thing is, I had a clean 10 install and I wanted to use Win Updates to go to 11 and it went like a dream. Macrium Reflect was first thing used and image taken @xxJackxx I get what you mean, it was just that it was something I had no experience of before, and after doing all the 'choose what the power button does' and fast startup type settings as usual, I couldn't understand why the machine kept turning on
I also had this feature enabled on my Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptop, it's so annoying. I had to disable it in the BIOS if I recall correctly.
