Possibly ZoneAlarm is not *so* bad?

for me the only firewall that has caused me problems was lns but that was a known bug between watch thread injection and the athlon 64 (dep protection). for some ppl outpost may be unstable but i only use what works for me.

This is the rule set i use for ZA that I got from another site. It seems to work ok but would like a few opinions if you don`t mind.

Launch ZoneAlarm Pro and click the "security" button.
Now goto the yellow side that shows "local" above it and set it to "high" with the slider in the middle.
Now,click the "customize" button. On the top is the high security settings. The only thing that should have a checkmark next to it is "allow broadcast/multicast". UNCHECK the top two above that. That's finished.
Now, scroll down until you get to the medium security settings area. Check mark ALL the boxes all the way down.
Now, when you get to the bottom area, it asks you for ports for TCP and UDP in and out.
Here are the settings to use:

    BLOCK INCOMING UDP PORTS: 1-65535
    BLOCK OUTGOING UDP PORTS: 1-19, 22-79, 82-7999, 8082-65535
    BLOCK INCOMING TCP PORTS: 1-65535
    BLOCK OUTGOING TCP PORTS: 1-19, 22-79, 82-7999, 8082-65535
You can cut and paste the following above. Okay, this side is finsihed!
Now for the blue side which is "Internet", make sure it has also applied here from the local area. If so, you're prepared! Otherwise MAKE SURE you do the same thing for this side as well!
Now click on the "alerts" button. Okay, now click the "advanced" button.
Here's the fun stuff. The tab local info should be shown. If not, click it.
Now select if you want to show your IP addy, hide it altogether or just hide the last three numbers of the number.
You're hidden if someone breaks into you. MAKE SURE you apply the setting!
The settings above will stop incoming ports 1-65535 and block ALL pings, trojans and more.

WSFuser - I was half kidding, but you are right... You should use what works for you and what you like, no doubt about it. I have used many firewalls and had them work fine for me only to have others say that they had massive problems with it. It always varies from one person to the next. I prefer others over Outpost, however in Outpost's defense, I have not had any real problems with it and I actually did purchase it too.

The advantages of Sygate over ZA(P) are:
the logging - can show all activity and the free Sygate has easy to use rule making as opposed to ZAP which as of yet ZL hasn't been able to make nearly as straightfoward and easy to use.

I use both ZAP and Sygate on two XP installations respectively.

    Regards - Charles

    I agree with you.

Sygate is more easy to use and give to us much more information than ZoneAlarm.

For free, I will use and advice NetVeda or Sygate...
But my first choise is Outpost Pro...

I am very very very sorry everyone that I did not keep up with the thread. My ISP was having problems in my area so therefore I could not access the Internet. Then on top of everything, my computer crashed somehow so I barely got done getting it reformatted.

Thanks for all of your kind advice, I will probably try Outpost or ZoneAlarm.
