I used to leave my computers running 24/7, but now I prefer to suspend them overnight. The problem on my Ubuntu Karmic laptop is that I have a cron job scheduled to perform system updates in the middle of the night, which obviously isn't going to happen if the computer is sleeping.

The Windows Task Scheduler gives one the option of waking up the computer to perform scheduled tasks; is the same possible in Ubuntu, and how?

    Thanks.

crons will still be run with anacron i think? or you can install anacron if it's not installed, it runs missed crons.

i had a look because i know it doesn't sound like you want anacron and you can do it with either apmsleep or rtcwake. there's a thread here -
