    Hi jive,

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://search.instantalbert.com/search.php
    N1 - Netscape 4: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.xupiter.com/toolbar2"); (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\User00\prefs.js)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

    O4 - Global Startup: Search.vbs

    O16 - DPF: {0246ECA8-996F-11D1-BE2F-00A0C9037DFE} (TDServer Control) - http://www.truedoc.com/activex/tdserver.cab

    Then reboot and find:
    search.vbs
Please open it in notepad, do not doubleclick it!!
    and post the content please.

And you really need to visit Windows update.

    Regards,

    Pieter

thanks! There seem to be no popups!

however I'm at the windows update and am trying to install but when I click to install, a windows dialog box appears (a progress box) saying its preparing to download, but just sits their. No download progress or anything. Just sits there. Does it usually take so long?

Hmm. I've seen that one a few times recently.

Can you try starting the auto-update?
That worked in at least two cases.
    Check here how:
