I get popups all the time when I open IE and close. It's only been happening recently. I've scanned my computer with updated virus definitions with Norton, and nothing came up. Here is my log:

Please help if you can. I've heard people advise downloading Spybot and Adware, but I wanted some help first before I did that. Thanks.

    Hi kkelway,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {000020DD-C72E-4113-AF77-DD56626C6C42} - C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wwind] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wwind.exe

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wwind.exe

    Reboot.

Now download Ad-Aware and double-click to install.
    Then follow the following steps:

1.) Start Ad-Aware by double-clicking on its desktop icon.
2.) Update Ad-aware by using its Globe icon.
3.) After updating, close all IE windows, then close and restart Ad-aware.
4.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
    "Unload recognized processes during scanning".
5.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically mark all objects in result list".
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion".
"XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior deletion" <-- Check only if you have Windows XP or 2000.
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot".
    6.) Press "Scan Now".
7.) Check option "Use Custom scanning options".
8.) Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan".
9.) Press "Select drives\folders to scan".
10.) Select the active partition which is usually C:
11.) Press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
12.) If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again.
13.) All items should be checked. if not right-click in that pane and choose "select all".
    14.) Press "next".
15.) When it asks to remove all checked items, Press "OK".
16.) You may now exit out of Ad-Aware and reboot your system. Then go to the next section for SpyBot S&D.

Now download Spybot S&D and install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
    Then follow the following steps:

1.) Run Spybot S&D from desktop icon or Start menu.
2.) Press "Search for updates" button to get list of updates available.
    3.) Press "Download updates" button.
4.) Close all IE windows, then close and restart Spybot S&D.
5.) Press "Check for problems" button.
6.) Have SpyBot remove all it marks in red by pressing "Fix selected problems".
7.) You may now exit out of SpyBot and reboot your system.

Now reboot your system and post a new HJT log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Thanks for the quick reply! A clarification about the hidden files. What do you want me to do? Unhide all files and run Hijack and post a new log before I start? I'm not sure what to look for.

    Hi kkelway,

The file that you will be deleting is hidden. Follow the steps to show hidden files, reboot into safe mode and delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\wwind.exe. Then proceed to Ad-Aware and SpyBot, and then post a new HJT log.

    HTH.....

    Regards,
    Kent

Hi, so far I ran the Hijack, ran the fixes, and deleted wwind in Safe Mode. (Although I still find a file in c:\windows\prefetch\wwind.exe-1AEBC58E.pf....is this okay?)

I downloaded and ran Adaware. In Tweaks, it wouldn't let me check "Automatically mark all objects in result list" and "XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior deletion"...but I ran the Scan anyway.

I am unclear what a "bad" file is. It list 65 new objects found (but no indication whether they are bad), and when I click next, none of it is checked. Should I check all and delete?

Thanks again for your help and I really appreciate your prompt response.

    Hi kkelway,

Yes, all of the files that Ad-Aware found are bad. Check them all and delete.

    Questions:
    1) Am I clean now?
    2) With Adaware and Spybot, am I protected from future infections of spyware? Do I need to do anything in those programs to turn it on to protect my computer? And how often should I run them?
    3) I have another laptop that I haven't been having any popup problems with. Should I still install and run Adaware and Spybot on that computer?

Please advise. Thanks again for your help.

    Hi kkelway,

Your log shows a sign of a possible CoolWebSearch infection also. Please download the latest copy of CWShredder and run. Be sure to have ALL other windows and programs closed. Click FIX and follow the instructions given. Then reboot and post a new HJT.
These programs are mainly on demand scanners. I would check for updates at least weekly and run them whenever an update has been issued.
Yes, it would be an excellent source to help keep your laptop clean also.

Here is some other info that will help you keep from becoming infected again.
Some tips and links that will help you stay safe on-line can be found HERE.
And here is a good read about how to be better protected : Click Me.
To help keep your system clean, these are also freeware programs that we recommend:
SpywareBlaster - will protect you from all spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.
SpywareGuard - provides a degree of real-time protection against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
IE-Spyad - will put a list of bad domains and sites into the Restricted Site Zone of your IE Browser. This will help protect IE and prevent those drive-by downloads, browser hijacking, ActiveX, Java, popups, cookies, etc, from compromising your computer while you surf.
And check for updates to your copy of Windows by going HERE often. This will help cut down on your chances of reinfestation.

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi kkelway,

You have two leftovers from CoolWebSearch.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com (HKLM)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com (HKLM)

Reboot and you will then be clean.
Your problems should be gone now.

    Regards,
    Kent
