I've cleaned up some spyware problems, but now my computer found some new problems. I get a window that says MS explorer performed an illegal operation and will shut down each time I go to shut down my computer. There are those pesky ~$ in front of my MS word docs (minor irritation, but still...). The log claims that I'm running McAfee and Norton AVs, but I can't find McAfee anywhere even in safe mode. I still have an extra popup each time I connect to the internet. Finally, each time I try to shut down my computer (it claims that windows is shutting down), it restarts even though I am certain the "shutdown" radio button is clicked. I'd be most grateful if anyone can point out what's hanging me up. Thanks.

    Hi kkoontz,

    Welcome to Wilders.

First, be sure you do not have an entry in your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel for Network Associates or Mcafee. If you do, then remove/uninstall it.

Be sure you do not have the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\. If you do, then delete it.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Vshwin32EXE] C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN\VSHWIN32.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VsStatEXE] C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee VirusScan\VSSTAT.EXE /SHOWWARNING
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VsEcomrEXE] C:\Program Files\Network Associates\McAfee VirusScan\vsecomr.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeWebScanX] C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN\WebScanX.Exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [McAfeeWebScanX] C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN\WebScanX.Exe /RUNSERVICES

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log along with a description of any problems you may still be having.

    Regards,
    Kent
