Please help. My browser homepage has been hijacked. When I launch a new browser, I get several pop-ups and I am redirected to res://pshls.dll/index.html#37049 a search page. Each time a cleanse my machine the part before the .dll gets changed to something random and I'm re-infected.

I have run Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D and below are the results of my Hijackthis! log. I have tried several times deleting various files and nothing seems to work. Please help me understand what I should remove.

    Thanks! Geoff

    Hello roger86,

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for addyf32.exe and d3mh.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit OK.
Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service".
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshls.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshls.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshls.dll/sp.html#37049

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D3F9FED7-F16A-C143-452D-C8418BD6B10E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapi32.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [javapi32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapi32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3mh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3mh.exe

Reboot the computer into safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default.
    Reset your search settings first.

Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:
    Select
    Show hidden files and folders
Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Next go to Search and scrolldown using the scroll bar on the right. Go down to More advanced options and click.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
    Search System folders
    Search Hidden Files and folders
    Search SubFolders

    Find and delete these files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pshls.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapi32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapi32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3mh.exe

    Reboot in Normal Mode.
Download the file attached to this post and rename it to cwsuninst.reg
Doubleclick it and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.
Run HijackThis again and post a new log.

    Taz71498,

Thanks so much for your help. I followed your intructions and it appears to have done the trick. Hopefully it will stick! Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent re-infection? I'm running Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton AV, and my windowsupdate is up to date.

Again thanks. I posted my latest log as you suggested as well.

    Geoff
