Hello, let me start out by saying whoever helps me sucessfully clone this drive will get 20 USD via paypal.

So I cloned a Dell laptop using Acronis 10, went to restore it on a new desktop with a clean install of WinXP, and i get BSOD every time. I am trying to get all my programs onto the new computer. Can you help?

No, sorry, payout is for successful completion of the task. If you could educate me as to why, I would appreciate it though!

bummer, thank you for the info though. Is it impossible to clone laptop to desktop? I have tried Every cloning software on the planet, and have probably installed windows 20-30 times on this machine.

No, it's extremely dicey to clone between any two non-identical computers - laptop vs. desktop is not the sole issue. Whether or not you succeed depends on the hardware differences.

Do you have the XP CD for the new machine?

If so, a repair install may solve your problem using the XP CD. This is a driver problem. The other issue you might get once you can successfully boot, is the Windows SSID feature preventing you accessing some of your files - this is easily solved if you are using XPpro or Corp.

You didn't mention what the BSOD error message and code is, this could be helpful in solving the problem.

Excellent point - clone, go directly to a repair install, and all the program installs/etc. are preserved.

Run SysPrep on your laptop then clone the SysPrep'd drive to your desktop. Upon bootup of desktop, install desktop drivers.

    That's good.

An alternative is to restore the image of the notebook to the new desktop. Don't try to boot the desktop from the hard drive. Instead, boot from a Windows installation CD and perform an "upgrade in place" installation of Windows choosing the same partition that Windows is already in. This forces a new assessment of the hardware and allows drivers for SATA drive or RAID drives to be added. (This is much like what Sysprep permits.)

To find out how to do the upgrade in place, read this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

The disadvantage is that it also wipes out all the Windows updates, so they have to be reinstalled.

    Where's the dough?

Please pay according to the following schedule:

    20% Brian
    20% Blue
    20% Bodgy
    20% JMK
    20% Me

    LOL!
