About a year ago I was hacked. Since then I have installed Norton AntiVirus, Port Explorer and Bulletproof Spyware software. I did try other programs in the past. I just removed my PersonalFirewall as it kept locking up my computer.
Now everytime I turn on my computer things change on the desktop. Also, it takes forever to load, and forever to shut down. Sometimes I get the setupscreen when I turn on the computer (the one that comfigures everything on your computer)before Windows even opens. I downloaded the HijackThis software and copied everything as seen below:
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.3

Im running Windows ME but it won't let me install any updates and Microsoft was not much help.According to the virus scans I have no viruses or spyware (except some adware in system restore that I can't seem to remove). I'm using Netscape browser but it sometimes doesn't work and only Internet Explorer does even when I tell it to use Netscape over IE.Can anyone tell me what I should remove from the above or where my problem might beo_O
    Thanks o_O

Hello Minera and Welcome to Wilders Security Forum

You have quite a lot of things that will be addressed. First you may wish to download and run both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware and then re-run Hijack This! and re-post again. Do not remove anything except what Spybot and Ad-Aware marks. Then someone will help you further. :)

    Best wishes

    Hi Minera :)

There are plenty of alternative F/W to choose from such as KPF,Sygate,ZA,LnS if you were having problems with existing F/W, but i wouldn't advise wandering round the net without one

Some newbie friendly, some not so newbie friendly

the folks here at wilders would happily help/assist if they had experience with a given product

and the ones previously mentioned are quite popular with a lot of members

Hence all the crapware in your log

    Also ;)

to remove adware from restore you will have to disable it then re-enable it, but you can leave that till after you have cleaned your system of crapware and the guys have checked your log for you

If you are not sure how to here is a link to some instructions and screenshots
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001012513122239

Hope you find these of some use :)

    Then reboot and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OWMngr.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\BULLETPROOFSOFT.COM <= entire folder

Then download Spybot - Search & Destroy
After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all IE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it marks in red.

    Or, download Ad-Aware at lavasoft.usa.com
After installing AAW, and before running the program, update by using the Globe icon.
    Shut down and restart Ad-Aware.
Now press "Scan Now", "Select drives\folders to scan" and select the active partition (usually C: ), then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again.
Rightclick in that pane and choose "select all" and click 'next'.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.
    Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

And read this on how to prevent future infections: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

    Pieter

Thanks so much for the quick replies. :D
I used to use ad-aware. I did purchase the Bulletproof Software o_O not sure if that is a good idea now that I will have to remove it.
Before I install the Spybot S&D and reinstall a new copy of the AdAware, should I leave the virus program etc as it is or disable them? Also since I posted the original question I re-loaded TCActive & TCMonitor. I used to have it on as the computer was being used by my son who used to dowload all sorts of stuff and it would let me know if something changed. Should I dissable/remove all of those first??

    Hi Minera,

    About BPS: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=7221
Ask for a refund, it probably won't lead to anything, but at least it's worth a try.
Installing AdAware and Spybot should not require any disabling of your AT and AV.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello again:
I did as instructed. Ran Search&Destroy and AdAware etc.
I also deleted the files Pieter suggested.
I deleted the folder and everything associated with the BulletProof stuff. As for getting a refund....the old saying "hope in hell" is probably more applicable lol
    The file :
C:\windows\system\OWNMngr.exe doesn't seem to exist even after a search for it. I also deleted any files for the Bulletproof
    Software in the regedit.
There is only one thing left I don't know what to do about.
S&D says I have a DSOExploit in Internet Explorer. I prefer to use Netscape but my daughter uses IE to view her MSN stuff. I read it is a hole of somekind leaving me open to hancking. I checked the site it refered to regarding it. It said to check:
    HKEY_Current_User]Software\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
setting\zone\0 but there are tons of stuff in there and about 7 zones. Therefore I did not touch anything in case I screw up.
The new hijackthis list is as follows:
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.3
Scan saved at 6:04:43 PM, on 31/10/2003

Im not sure if there is anything else in the above that is fishy. Should I simply delete the DSOExploit as suggested by search&destroy? I cannot upgrade/update my ie browser as it freezes halfway on installing updates. Microsoft was not much help about that part. If I delete IE and reinstall everything from the windowsME disc would that fix the problem with IEo_O

    Hi Minera,

The log is clean now. Good job. :)

You can have Spybot fix the DSOExploit and you will probably never notice the change.

To install IE6 without the errors interfering follow the procedure here: http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html

    Hello again:
Thanks so much to all of you for the help. I will probably reinstall the firewall again once everything is ok. And I reinstalled the adware again and crossing fingers nothing else will go wrong. Thanks for the link to the ie6 Pieter. I am going to fix that one as soon as i have a minute.
    "Hugs all the helpful guys"
Once again thanks so much :D for the help!!
